Additionally, UAS settings must be aligned
carefully to ensure safety if the aircraft and controller lose communication during flight. They
also must be calibrated to ensure the highest-quality images are collected-not just on
the screen at the time but recorded for review
after the flight. Safety is paramount and weather
conditions can be the biggest challenge. As such,
several unmanned aircraft missions have had to
be rescheduled due to rain, snow, high winds
and low temperatures.

SUMMARY
Using UAS technology has proven to be an efficient and cost-effective way to gather critical substation information. The use of this cutting-edge
technology has contributed greatly to integrating
ADMS into Xcel Energy's advanced grid initiative
and will continue to be moving forward.
Through its innovative UAS efforts, Xcel Energy
has developed an industry leading best practice
helping other utility companies realize the value
of using innovation and new technologies to

support a variety of asset management activities. Additionally through the "Partnership for
Safety" program with the FAA, Xcel Energy has
already helped influence new regulations and
requirements for unmanned aircraft operations
in the utility industry. What's more, with permission granted from the FAA, in April 2018, Xcel
Energy became the first U.S. utility company to
fly drones beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS)
of the pilot in command and the visual observer
to perform transmission line inspections near
Denver, Colorado. The company has more flights
planned for later this year.

Better together
We work all hours of the night so she can
have her happily ever after. Together, Tri-State
and our family of electric cooperatives
power all the moments your life has to offer.
We are brighter, stronger and better together.
