"FIND

WAY"
JOURNEY SPARKS INTENTION AT
RMEL'S SPRING CONFERENCE

In the Wake of Immense Power Industry Changes and
Challenges, the Next Generation Taps into Merril's
Leadership Strategies to Keep Americans Safe and Secure
Through Affordable, Reliable Electricity
INTRODUCTION BY MERRIL HOGE:
Thank you to RMEL for allowing me the opportunity to share my story. I enjoyed opening RMEL's 2019 Spring Conference, and it was a
privilege to then sit down and chat with Emerging Leader Award Winners who will one day be our power industry leaders. It is conversations like these that remind me of the key learning moments I've had with my mentors. Chuck Noll used to say that a true leader never
announces his leadership, and he lived that truth. His consistent integrity and his ability to quickly evaluate people were gifts that helped
us all rise to our best level both individually and as a team. He urged us to find our life's work, and sharing my message has become one
of the most important parts of my life's work today. I hope these Emerging Leaders are able to put that message into action because it
gives back tenfold time and time again. Thank you again for allowing me to share the "Find A Way" message and my journey.

"FIND A WAY"
It was something special to be at this year's Spring Conference. The nexus
of a quickly changing industry paradigm and an empowering message
from Keynote Merril Hoge, retired NFL running back and cancer survivor,
was right on target. Merril's sheer determination to beat the odds, regardless of circumstances, parallels the grit of the power industry workforce to
overcome obstacles, the likes of which this industry has never seen.
Merril kicked off the conference telling his personal story of perseverance
through childhood challenges, deciding at the age of 12 he was going to
be in the NFL. He described how he worked his way, tooth-and-nail, to be
drafted into the NFL, where he held the longest consecutive playing streak
in the NFL at the time of his retirement. He navigated a successful career
as an ESPN analyst, fought and won his battle with cancer and survived
open heart surgery. You could hear a pin drop when Merril described the
experience of telling his children about his cancer diagnosis and how his
nine-year-old daughter crawled onto his lap and said, "Hey Dad, find a
way." At that moment, his daughter changed his energy and inspired him
to take action, using the words he had built his life around: Find. A. Way.
After hearing her, "I knew right then that dying was not an option," he said.
