ELECTRIC ENERGY | Winter 2019 - 11

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2019 Fall
Executive Leadership and Management Convention and
embraced the Convention theme: Market Influencers and
Opportunities: Leading Our Industry in Times of Change. The
challenges before us as an industry are certainly great, but
together and as individual organizations, it is evident that
we are moving the needle forward and have taken critical
steps towards evolving into the electric utility industry
of the future. Industry executives and influencers openly
shared their perspectives and valuable experiences during
the 2019 Vital Issues Forum where their strategies and new
ideas complemented the impressive lineup of convention
speakers. With every Fall Convention and every Vital Issues
Forum, I am inspired by the resilience of our industry and
what our future will hold!

-Ken Wilmot, VP, Vital Issues, RMEL & Sr. VP
and Chief Operations Officer,
Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc.

"A strategic inflection point is a time in the life of a
business when its fundamentals are about to change.
That change can mean an opportunity to rise to new
heights. But it may just as likely signal the beginning
of the end."
-Andy Grove, Only the Paranoid Survive
Collaboration and communication are critical components to keep the
electric energy industry strong, and those are also hallmarks of RMEL. Each
year, RMEL hosts an Executive Vital Issues Forum at the Fall Executive
Leadership and Management Convention. This gathering provides an
opportunity for senior-level electric utility executives to meet and discuss
the major issues affecting our industry.
Setting the tone for the Fall Convention, Keynote John Doggett
proclaimed, "This industry is at a strategic inflection point." Doggett's
thought-provoking presentation focused on global insights, strategies and
opportunities for a sustainable electric energy future.
Doggett's notion of the industry being at a strategic inflection point
dovetailed well with the 2019 Fall Convention theme, "Market Influencers
and Opportunities - Leading Our Industry in Times of Change." He took
the idea of this transforming industry and focused on how leaders are using
data, facts, engineering and research to use change as an opportunity.
The variety of the Fall Convention presentations and open networking
discussions were the gold to be mined at this convention. Industry leaders
in the Vital Issues Forum shared what steps they've already taken to move
their respective organizations forward, and what critical issues they are
focusing on now.

EMBRACING TRANSFORMATION: GENERATION,
TECHNOLOGY, EMPLOYEE, CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
AND DATA OPPORTUNITIES
"We do something that no other industry does, which is, if it breaks, we fix it.
Period! End of conversation," Doggett said during his keynote. "We're going
to figure out what's going on, and we're going to find it and we're going to fix
it. How many other industries are like that?"
The Vital Issues Forum attendees have tackled immense challenges with
the same grit and tenacity that this industry known for. Their conversation
focused on three main areas:
■ Effective Approaches to Balance Energy Cost Versus the Need to
Decarbonize Generation Supplies
■ The Data & Technology Opportunity-Long-term Planning with
Handling Large Amounts of New Data
■ Critical Evolution Toward the Customer and Employee Experience of
the Future

EFFECTIVE APPROACHES TO BALANCE ENERGY COST VS.
THE NEED TO DECARBONIZE GENERATION SUPPLIES
Generating electricity today means environmental regulations, nuclear
fleets being challenged and working toward very aggressive decarbonization goals while maintaining a competitive advantage and keeping costs
low for customers.
"The majority of customers care about costs, but that's not what rises to the
top of the fray in the discussion at public forums," said a Vital Issues participant.
