FEATURE TOP TRUCKS FOR SPF CONTRACTORS BY FIONA SOLTES A half-dozen years ago, when Stephan Claus and a partner, Shaun Geiger, purchased Angelus Waterproofing & Restoration, Inc., work trucks were part of the deal. Over time, however, Claus has advanced - and diversified - his overall fleet to range from light duty to extra heavy-duty trucks, including a couple of flex fuel vehicles that primarily run on E85, an ethanol fuel blend of 85 percent denatured ethanol fuel and 15 percent gasoline. Other items on the future "it would be nice" list include GPS tracking that would allow the company to know when drivers arrived at their destinations, how long it took them to get there, and if they happened to be near a supplier when a pickup needed to take place. Then there's the possibility of a full electric or plug-in hybrid truck somewhere down the line - as long 40 SPRAYFOAM PROFESSIONAL | Spring 2016 as it could travel as far as needed and be good for the environment without sacrificing performance. One thing, however, is fairly standard. A majority of the company's trucks, including three F150s and two F250, are the same manufacturer, Ford, to minimize maintenance costs, parts and supplies. The two flex fuel trucks are a GMC Sierra 1500 and a Ford F150, and there's a Chevy Tiltmaster, too, for the heaviest jobs. "You've got to look at what type of work you'll be doing, and plan within those parameters," said Claus, the company's president. "You don't want to use an F350 if you're just taking a bucket and paint roller to a jobsite." The California-based Angelus Waterproofing & Restoration, Inc., with an emphasis on "sealing the building envelope since 1983," handles a great variety of tasks as a specialty contractor. But even for those whose business is more strictly sprayfoam, a holistic view of the current - and future - fleet may be in order. The latest offerings from vehicle manufacturers are aimed at improving efficiency, reducing costs, increasing use of alternative fuels and making the most of technology. BOX OR TRUCK AND TRAILER? For some, a work truck is just a work truck. It's simply a vehicle that gets employees and equipment to the job site. For sprayfoam professionals, depending on the weight that needs to be hauled, the vehicle could be light duty, it could be a box truck or it could be somewhere in the middle. An informal survey of Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance members found that most use truck and trailer combinations rather than box trucks, and favorite models include Chevy Silverado 2500HDs and 3500s as well as Ford F150s and F250s. "I prefer, at minimum, an F250 series or a one-ton truck with a flatbed, making it easier to forklift materials and job essentials than a standard pickup bed," noted Dennis (Denny) Vandewater, founder of Sadler Coating Systems and
