BEHIND THE FOAM LIGHTNING STRIKES! OUT OF THE BLUE BY SHANI CALVO W hen Jesse and his father Dan donned their safety gear for some uplift tests on a sunny August morning, the sun was already well on its way to heating up the Florida-scape to a toasty temperature. The blue, cloudless sky looked idyllic, and gave the Maxwell Urethane Roofing crew no reason to be concerned as they climbed onto the roof of the Raleigh House in Port Charlotte, Florida. But all was not as it seemed. Mother Nature was about to throw them a curve ball, and nobody saw it coming. "It was totally out of the blue, literally," said Dan, who will never forget what happened next and still gets a quiver to his voice when reliving the events. "There were no clouds and no rain. It was a bright blue sky," he said. Jesse agreed, adding, "It was sunny. I had no idea there was anything remotely close. You couldn't see anything overhead and I certainly hadn't heard any thunder." So when Dan saw the lightning streak out of the sky and hit the roof - knocking down all five people who were working on the roof - it was the last thing he expected. "I saw a big flash, heard a boom and everyone fell down." As he watched everyone shakily get up, he breathed a sigh of relief - until he noticed there was still one man down: his son Jesse. "Jesse didn't get up," he said. There were five guys on the roof, but only four got up. Both the Sheriff's Department and the Fire Department were on the scene after Jesse's lightning strike and resuscitation. Notice the metal ladder (on left) leaning against the stairwell roof, which is about a foot lower than the main roof. Dan Maxwell was at the top of that ladder when lightning struck his son Jesse and knocked down four other men on the roof, about 50 feet away from Dan. 44 SPRAYFOAM PROFESSIONAL | Spring 2016 Dan was at the top of a ladder about 50 feet from Jesse, so ran over to the still body of his son, thinking that he would be OK and just needed a little time. But, he quickly realized Jesse had taken a direct hit and was far from OK. "His brown eyes were looking straight up and when I shook him, his eyes rolled back in his head," said Dan. "All I could see were the whites of his eyes." Immediately, Dan's first-aid training kicked in and he started performing CPR on Jesse. He and the engineer Anthony Tomassi, who was one of the five knocked down, took turns doing compressions and CPR - but did not see any results. After being hit by lightning, Jesse Maxwell was in the hospital for three days. He was struck in the shoulder, then it went through his heart and zigzagged down his left side and wrist.
