SPRAYFOAM Professional - Spring 2016 - (Page 6)

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S CORNER CONNECT + REFRESH + FOCUS + PREPARE AT SPRAYFOAM 2016 W ait a second. We just left Albuquerque didn't we? It's like someone hit the fast-forward button on this past year and then broke it off. Am I the only one feeling like that? With the pace of business today it's more important than ever to take a breath, reflect on your own past year and the one ahead, and decouple from your day-to-day grind while you focus on connecting with your industry for a few days at the show. Welcome back friends and colleagues to the SPFA Annual Convention and Expo, this great and one-of-a-kind meeting place where SPF professionals can connect, refresh, focus, get up to speed on what's new or what's coming in the year, learn from each other, and be better prepared for tomorrow than we were yesterday for today. It's been a busy year for SPFA and many of the things we've been working on will be on display in one way or another at the show! We are closing in on the 2000th PCP test in a program that frankly is just approaching being done developmentally. How can that be, you ask? Well, the sheer amount of work over the last few years that went into creating it from scratch was incredible on both member and staff sides. One of the best General George Patton quotes says, "A good plan violently executed today is better than a perfect plan next week." Wiley Cerilli, the well-known tech startup guru, takes that a step further and acknowledges, "In the early days, you have limited time and resources, so you can't afford to take your time and build out a lot of features and try 6 SPRAYFOAM PROFESSIONAL | Spring 2016 to make everything perfect. Pick one solution, and get your product out as early as you can...fail fast, learn fast, win fast." That's exactly what we did with the PCP certification program. And while the program has been a success, it has also kept staff and members persistently busy all this time, fixing aspects of the program, the process, finding ways to reduce costs, building in features that either there was no time for the first go around or because they rely on some aspect of the program that didn't exist early on. The industry in its entirety owes a huge debt of gratitude to the members who have toiled-on, knowing there is still more work to do than can be done, and then plugging away at it every day in addition to the rest of their jobs. At the show you're going to hear some great things coming out of SPFA's technical programs, with new tech documents, updated member contractor safety program to ramp up inclusion of new confined space compliance materials, research projects leading to new construction technologies built around SPF, and so much more. You're going to hear great news about recently-passed federal tax incentives that will bring the first-cost of SPF down for customers without eating into your margins, that SPFA had a hand in making happen for you. You're going to see the leading manufacturers of materials and equipment and accessories all in one place and accessible to you in the exhibit hall. While the good can go on far longer than space allows, you're also going to hear directly from the OSHA project leader on what new demands will be placed upon you resulting from a legally contested new confined space rule. While there may be some frustration with the rule itself, the "good" resides in the fact that the person responsible for the whole program is going to be standing in front of you at the show to inform you and field your questions. These are among the important conversations of our industry. These are the things that do affect the day to day of SPF in many ways. These are the things that SPF professionals talk about many times only superficially, but at the show there will be a report or presentation or poster or something offering you the information and detail you are looking for to be properly informed so you can be better at what you do. Please, enjoy the show, enjoy Florida, and most of all, because this is an industry of human beings, enjoy each other, learn from each other, and know that we take you and your support very seriously. SPFA staff and member leadership know there are a lot of things you can do with your time and money, and the fact that you committed both to being at the show humbles us. Thank you for your support, trust and partnership with us as we kick off the best-yet SPFA Annual Convention and Expo. Kurt P. Riesenberg SPFA Executive Director
