SPRAYFOAM Professional - Winter 2015 - (Page 6)

ExEcutivE DirEctor's cornEr WE HavE comE so Far - so FAST! A nother hopefully successful year is drawing to a close and as we approach the 2016 convention, the main subject of this issue, I have to reflect back on the year and think how far we've come on some things. I also think of how far we have to go on others, and the work that awaits in the year ahead. The year in retrospect effectively becomes much of the content for the convention breakout sessions. Each of the staff, committees and volunteers continue day after day in SPFA to keep moving the needle on the SPF industry. These efforts span the scope of SPF from certification deployment and increasing technical services and resources, to expanding SPFA's relationship with the broader construction industry, addressing market challenges and establishing a route to growth and success for all SPF professionals. Much of what SPFA does day to day feels incremental, but when examining accomplishments and output of effort over the period of a year it continues to amaze me how far and how fast this industry has moved. While the convention is a great thing for attendees, exhibitors and for sponsors wanting to get exposure, it is also a great thing for SPFA because it's like a line in the sand that we keep coming across every year. A line of announcement and pride and completion of objectives and a chance to bring the latest information to all of the attendees. Which is great because it does keep things moving and maintains a sense of urgency among staff and volunteer committee members. And it's a chance for us to reward our members with the single largest membership-based discount on registration, so they are incentivized to come to the show and get up to speed on everything that will be coming at them next year. 6 sprayfoam Professional | Winter 2015 Just this year we have seen the introduction of a state requirement calling for SPFA PCP Certifications for license (the outcome of that likely coinciding with the publishing of this issue), growing examples of PCP certifications being called for in job specs, growth in completion numbers in that program and accommodation to multiple audiences by offering Spanish testing and online training. The PCP program completed a full two-day ISO annual audit with exceptional performance and compliments from the ISO team conducting the review, further adding to the program's credibility and customers' trust of installers with SPFA PCP wallet cards. Just this year we have seen a complete overhaul of the SPFA (formerly "AY") technical documents, new delivery of bi-monthly Foam-It-Right® webinars covering a variety of technical and H+S topics just for members, addressed ongoing technical regulatory issues with federal agencies, worked with members to address concerns and issues around OSHA's new confined space requirements, published new roofing and PV guidance, and much more. We've seen more SPF-focused negative press than ever from detractors and tech competitors, signaling increasing attacks on SPF concurrent with its increasing market share. But we have also seen more positive SPF-focused SPFA-produced information and articles, many of which published in trade publications and websites throughout the construction industry. Many of these subjects are to be themes and topics you will see weaved throughout the elements of the annual convention and in continuing hard work in 2016. I want to thank each of the active members that work on committees to bring the value of SPFA to the SPF industry at-large, those involved in organizing the convention, doing the tech or marketing or certification work. They are the true unsung heroes of the industry because they are quietly, methodically charting a course into the future for the growth of SPF. If you are reading this, you benefit from their efforts and should thank them also. Lastly but notably, the methodical and focused march to the future we create for ourselves makes me think of why we have the keynote speaker for the convention that we do this year. Richard R. Rawlings, owner of Gas Monkey Garage and hit Discovery Channel TV show Fast N' Loud, embodies the principles we as an industry and as individual companies need to find success. After being successful in an unrelated industry Richard dedicated himself to his passion, building hot-rods and making people happy. He does that in spades but he's always had his eye on the bigger prize - building the Gas Monkey brand into great cars, apparel, restaurants, a race team, and even a tequila business. Richard and his crew are fantastic and while he runs his small business on TV, many of his challenges run parallel to the challenges your company also has. I am genuinely excited to hear him speak on the need for quality, safety, vision, consistency and dedication to building brand that each of our members will be able to apply to their own companies. See you all in Orlando! Kurt P. Riesenberg SPFA Executive Director
