GROWING

the Future in Winters
In just a few short years, the Winters Joint Unified School District has
embraced a new vision for student success and launched a series of
initiatives designed to prepare students to be future-ready.

F

or the Winters Joint Unified School District, our
motto says it all. Simply put, we are "Rooted in
Excellence." As a small school district, located in
the heart of California's Central Valley, Winters is
a farming community and being "rooted" takes
on special significance.
In Winters, we celebrate and recognize our community roots.
The adults in our town go above and beyond to support our
youth, and so do the staff members in the Winters Joint Unified
School District. As it is in many small districts, every staff member knows every student and every school plays a vital role in
connecting the community.
Over the past few years, amidst much change in education,
it has been important for us in the Winters JUSD to return to
our roots as we set a focus for the future. In reflecting on the
work we have done, and where we still want to go, the following
principles have guided our efforts in implementing our Local
Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and other district initiatives.
1. HAVE A CLEAR VISION

In the fall of 2015, the District invited business and community
leaders to join with parents, staff, and students for an evening
workshop to set a new vision for our schools. Being a farming
town, the idea of cultivating and supporting students as they
learn and grow became an important and unifying concept.
Just as we were about to end the evening, a student stood
up and added that student success requires the adults in our
schools and community to inspire students along the way.

The District then adopted a vision of "Inspiring and Cultivating
Pathways to Success." An artist captured the conversation during the workshop, and we return to this visual and our vision
often as it drives our work and all that we do. We want every
student in the Winters Joint Unified School District to graduate
from high school with a plan for their future and the confidence
and competencies to make that plan a reality.

2. ALIGN ALL GOALS

With the vision set, our Board of Trustees identified their priorities and we developed District-wide goals and priorities to
support them. As elected officials and community leaders, our
Trustees were clear in what mattered most to them: support our
students and staff, and hold everyone accountable for ongoing
growth and success.
Using these board priorities-along with the District's vision,
and input from staff, students, parents, and the community-our
LCAP committee set goals and actions for where we wanted to
go and how to get there.
