SSDA Today - Fall/Winter 2017 - 13

Additionally, our school sites and departments now develop
annual plans and goals aligned with our District's LCAP. This
data is stored and analyzed in an online program called Progress
Adviser, a common platform we use to ensure we are all working
in the same direction.
3. EMBRACE A MINDSET FOR GROWTH

The work of education and creating pathways for student success is difficult at times. In Winters, we've come to view those
challenges as opportunities for growth and reflection, both for
our students and our staff. Over the past few years, we've realized that if we want our students to be gritty and persevere, the
adults in the District must do so, as well. Similarly, if we want to
foster critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity,
and citizenship, the staff must embrace and model those same
21st century learning skills.
At our District-wide meetings and events-and at our site and
department meetings-we focus on developing a mindset for
continuous growth. All of our employees set annual goals, monitor their progress, and reflect on them throughout the year. We
take time to celebrate our successes, as well as focus on what
can be learned from our struggles and challenges.
4. BE STRENGTHS-BASED

In Winters, we are focused on our strengths. Every District
Leadership Council and Leadership Team Meeting begins with
a discussion of our strengths, both as individuals and as a collective organization. We utilize a program called StrengthsFinder
to identify those qualities and traits that make us strong. This
does not mean, however, that we're not focused on improvement; rather, it means we believe we must utilize our strengths
as a team in order to get better.
For example, those members of our team that are "strategic"
thinkers, have been instrumental in designing District-wide systems and processes to better align our work. Our "communicators" have helped develop our social media presence. And those
that have strong skills in creating "harmony" have helped us
realize the power of making personal connections.
GROWING THE FUTURE

Because we've embraced these key principles, a number of
District-wide initiatives have not only taken root, but are now
starting to blossom and are growing strong. For example:
* We embrace the potential and power of technology in Winters,
and have taken the Future Ready Pledge and are a Google
for Education Reference District. Specifically, we utilize 1:1
technology for our 3rd through 12th grade students and are
2:1 in our primary grades. In fact, our 6th through 12th grade
students are able to take that technology home. Additionally,
because we've partnered with organizations like School2Home
and the Yolo County Office of Education, we have been able to
provide parents with technology education and increase digital
literacy and citizenship. From setting up Maker's Spaces and
STEAM Labs on our sites, to building a new Career Technical
Education Center at our high school, we value innovation.

* We believe a child's pathway to success starts in preschool
and continues to high school. In fact, our schools are
focused on implementing college-going and career ready
programs that help students discover, explore, and engage
with post-secondary opportunities. Just recently, we redesigned our graduation requirements and diplomas to recognize and honor the multiple pathways and courses that our
students can take.
* We feel strongly that college and career readiness isn't just
about knowing what you want to do and where you want to
go after high school; it's also about knowing who you are
and how to work with others to solve problems and make a
difference. Fostering the social and emotional skills of our
students is critically important, and from preschool to 12th
grade we've been able to implement a number of programs to
support student success.
* We believe in continuous learning and growth, for both our
students and our staff. In fact, over the past few years, our
teachers led a complete redesign of our teacher evaluation
process, creating a program that now aligns professional
development and growth with formal evaluation. Through
a series of ongoing learning-focused conversations and
observations, teachers are able to reflect on their practice
and student learning-outcomes, and do so with colleagues,
