Dear Colleagues:
Welcome to a new school year, and the
Fall/Winter 2017 issue of SSDA TODAY. We
are excited to bring you another issue of our
members-only magazine, designed to keep
you connected to the work SSDA is doing on
behalf of small school districts, and bring you
inspiration from those doing great things for
their students and communities.
For me, the beginning of a school year always
brings with it the excitement of new possibilities
and ideas. Here at SSDA, we love to hear about
school districts thinking big and embracing new
concepts. One example you'll read about in this
issue is Winters Joint Unified School District,
who invited their entire community to help set a
new vision for their schools to help ensure their
students are prepared for the future. And we're
proud to tell you about Bonsall Unified School
District, whose retired superintendent, Dr. Justin
Cunningham, was recently honored with the
"Innovative Superintendent" award by the
Classroom of the Future Foundation.

SSDA TODAY | FALL/WINTER 2017

We want to hear more stories like this! What
is your small-yet-mighty school district doing to
help prepare students for the future? Or what are
some unique programs you may have started?
Whatever it is, tell us about it!
And that leads me to introduce Corrie Pelc,
SSDA's new administrative assistant. Corrie
brings to our organization over 17 years of journalism and association management experience, which will help us continue to meet
the unique needs of small school districts. If
you have any stories you would like to share
for upcoming issues of SSDA TODAY-or
you just want to welcome her!-email her at
corrie@ssda.org.
Recently SSDA has had some wins for small
schools districts, including the DIR provisions
and total and complete victory on the reserve cap
exemption, where all districts of 2,500 ADA and
smaller will be completely exempted from the
cap. These are just a few of our commitments to
represent all small school districts in California.
If you are not a member already, we encourage
you to join SSDA to help strengthen our voice
in Sacramento. And please mark your calendars to join us for our 2018 Annual Conference,
February 19-21, 2018, in Sacramento.
As always, we thank you-our members-for
being part of all our efforts as we work to ensure
our small school districts get great results.
We wish you all a successful school year and
look forward to seeing you all at this year's
SSDA events!
