e xe c ut i v e v i c e p re s i d e nt 's M ES S AG E TXAPA is Dedicated to Quality By Harold Mullen TXAPA Executive Vice President sustainability of the asphalt used on the project. The Green Award is earned by contractors for their use of sustainable practices in the construction of an asphalt pavement. The 2015 NAPA Quality in Construction Awards Program winners includes: R ecognizing quality asphalt pavements and the people responsible for those pavements is a perpetual enjoyment for the team at TXAPA. We realize how difficult the coordination of materials, equipment, training, personnel, weather conditions, and partnering efforts that go into a project can be to be successful. With experience we learn that award winning, successful projects are even more difficult to achieve and well worth the exposure they receive in order for us to learn how the dedicated stakeholders on those projects achieved their high level of success. Each year TXAPA and TxDOT recognize winners of the Texas Quality Asphalt Pavement Awards Program and submit those projects that complete the necessary technical information to the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) for NAPA's Quality in Construction Awards. During the recent NAPA Annual Meeting, they announced the winners of their 2015 awards program which included six TXAPA members. We would like to congratulate those members and thank them for their dedication to quality. NAPA's Quality in Construction Awards Program recognizes quality asphalt pavements constructed in sustainable and/or innovative ways. Each pavement has to qualify for an award in the Quality in Construction categories - Airport Pavements, General Pavements (under 50,000 tons), or Highway Pavements (over 50,000 tons). An optional section on the nomination form allows applicants to highlight the adaptability and QIC Airport Pavement Award for exemplary quality in airport pavements Duininck, Inc. North Tarrant Express in Fort Worth Jagoe-Public Co. TxDOT US 380 in Denton How to achieve award winning asphalt pavements is always a topic of importance around TXAPA members. To bring that focus to all stakeholders, TXAPA's Partners in Quality (PIQ) program is expanding to include 30 PIQ meetings in 2016. The PIQ meetings are held with each TxDOT district throughout Texas with each meeting agenda being specific to the challenges and opportunities in that area. So far, PIQ meetings have been held with Lufkin, Bryan, Austin and Dallas districts. Great discussions and open communication on a variety of topics such as TxDOT's move to Superpave, proper use of Thin Overlay Mixes, the importance of project preparation - level-up, base repair, milling, and effective pre-paving meetings are leading to positive results that will hopefully lead to more award winning asphalt pavements in those districts. The first topic that is always discussed at the PIQ meetings and at any TXAPA meeting is safety. Thanks to the TXAPA Environmental, Health and Safety Committee chaired by Steve Ford, Lane Construction, TXAPA members are receiving an email blast called "Safety Share" twice a month to use as tool-box talks or safety reminders around the office or shop. These safety highlights are featured at our PIQ meetings, committee meetings and any meeting facilitated by TXAPA. The Safety Share can also be found on TXAPA's website at www.texasasphalt.org. Mr. Ford and his committee have become very active and recently held the TXAPA EHS Seminar which featured topics on safety, environmental regulations and emergency preparedness. The committee is meeting monthly and is preparing a series of educational and training webinars that will assist TXAPA members and partners with their pursuit of a safe and sustainable work place and quality products. TXAPA's Board of Directors reminds TXAPA members and partners that TXAPA has expanded our resources to help meet the needs of members and owner/agencies and engineers. TXAPA has contracted with several industry consultants to reach out to those needing training, education or assistance on all topics related to asphalt pavements. Whether your needs are focused on engineering, economic, environmental or safety issues, TXAPA has the resources to assist. Our Industry Relations Consultants are: Chuck Fuller, David Fuller, Murray Ricks, Doug Wilcox, and Larry Welch. These experienced consultants are excited for the opportunity to visit and assist you with your asphalt needs. Please give us a call at TXAPA to facilitate a visit from one of our consultants that are truly "Dedicated to Quality." ✪ Texas Asphalt Magazine SPRING 2016 9 http://www.texasasphalt.org
