Embracing Automation & New Technologies

A

By Brian O'Toole

s I travel across the county these days, I hear
similar stories about the loss of existing
talent and acquisition of new talent into
our industry. The rate at which DOT employees are
retiring is faster than the number of new employees that are being hired. Loss to retirement along
with privatization of many of the testing functions is creating a tremendous knowledge gap that
has to be addressed. On the private side, contractors are having a tough time hiring and retaining
top-tier employees that are dedicated to high performance and quality work. Combining the problems
we are facing with the talent pool and the fact that
universities are also seeing a decline in enthusiasm
from the younger generation for our profession,
there has never been a time when our  industry
needs to further its embrace of technology and
innovation. Change is always difficult, but it is
important to  see how and where new technologies can help our industry keep its advantage over
the competition.
The question is: Where do we find the newest
technologies in order to improve the quality of
our product, speed of construction, consistency of
results, AND appeal to a newer generation of worker
that will be loyal to our profession?
There is no better place to find the latest and
greatest innovations in asphalt than with the

Associate Members of TXAPA. Today I took some
time to review the Associate Member Landing Page
of the TXAPA website (http://www.texasasphalt.org)
and was impressed with all the new, innovative
companies that make up our now almost 140 members. Companies that automate processes, make
asphalt plants run cleaner and more efficient,
deliver new ways of performing antiquated tests,
supply the latest in paving equipment, etc. Take
some time to visit the Associate Member page on our
website where you will find links to a tremendous
amount of resources, and get a glimpse of what is
new in our industry.
Now, that's not to say the fundamentals of our
business are changing. Just like baseball will always
be a game of throwing, catching, hitting and running, asphalt is, and for the foreseeable future will
be primarily a mixture of aggregates and binder,
used for constructing and maintaining all kinds of
roads. Our Regular Membership continues to work
with TXAPA and TxDOT to pave the highest quality
roads and we thank them for that.
As we move forward together, all of us need to
be conscious on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
of how our businesses and industry as a whole are
viewed by subsequent generations. Are we making the
efforts, in areas where we can, to move technology
and our mindsets forward?
