and right. The issue was not on my side,
but on the other person. On Thesaurus.com,
there are common synonyms for "expectation" such as "chance," "hope" and "prediction." The kicker for me is the common
antonyms of expectation which include
fact, proof, reality and truth. When I looked
at the common antonyms of "expectation"
it made me realize that the word could
mean "fiction," "theory," "fantasy" or lie.
While I may have used expectation in the
correct form during many times in conversation, my understanding this angle of the
word expectation has not been there. You
will have to be the judge if I am mincing
hairs on this.
I cannot imagine a safety director at the
Annual Meeting saying "Our Safety Lie this
year is that no one gets injured." I doubt
that safety director would make it far in an
interview process as a potential candidate.
Or I doubt that anyone would be thinking,
"We need a guy like that on our team." But
is it okay to use "Our safety expectation is
that no one gets injured?"It happens and
will still happen after this article is published and distributed. The better question

to pose might be, "Is there a better way
to get your message out there where it
resonates and is impressed on your team?"
I believe there is, and you have to phrase
and rephrase to increase comprehension
and buy in. You probably have heard that
the adult learner has to hear, be exposed or
listen to a new bit of information at least
three to five times before learning that new
piece of information. Ideas and processes
are easier to understand when the big picture is seen and understood and listened
to several times. There are several caveats
to learning. Understanding, listening and
repetition are those caveats that must be
done. All leaders could repeat the same
statements in the same way and expect
it to be heard and listened to. Mottos do
work, but do they have any weight to them?
Does it pass the road test?
I believe every company expects a goal
of zero recordables and claims. Everyone
is safe, insurance premiums go down and
indirect costs are reduced as well. If this is
our expectation, then are we setting ourselves up for disappointment and frustration? Is it possible across the Gulf coast of

Texas? Or the whole state of Texas? We go
many days without accidents, incidents or
claims throughout the year. Why couldn't
we? Is having the expectation enough? All
accidents are preventable and safety is no
accident. If we would have just paid more
attention or had the right tool or right body
position or have been at the right place or
the right time we would not be dealing with
an injury and all the complications that come
from it. Is this the expectation or target we
have for ourselves? What I do know, is that
it is a terrible feeling when things don't go
as expected in any situation. I need to ask
myself: Is what I am expecting a theory, a
fantasy or a lie? Have I built this issue up
too much or is my expectation a one-sided
argument in the scene I am in? Next time I
use expectation I am going to make sure it
is right for my audience. Words are a part of
communication and leadership. When we can
better explain ourselves and communicate to
others the passion we have for our desires
to them, we can then overcome the hurdles
and road blocks in life. And hopefully we can
add value to each other and the cultures we
are a part of.
