permit limit is set 530 ppb. For chloride,
the permit limit is set at 820 parts per
million (ppm) and the discharged water
only had a concentration of 30.2 ppm.
So far, Dominion has kept concentration
levels far below what the permit allows.
The water is tested both by Dominion
and a third party environmental firm to
ensure the results are accurate.
After the wastewater is treated and
discharged into the James, the next issue
to deal with is the solid ash waste. Part
of the treatment process involves a solids press that is very similar to a sludge
press at a typical wastewater treatment
plant. All solids collected in the initial
screening are pressed to remove all of
the water. The existing ponds are lined
and the dry ash then put back in place.
They then place a protective covering
over the ash with an additional two feet
of soil and grass. This ensures the ash
cannot become airborne or adversely
affect groundwater quality.
Overall Dominion is taking a very
proactive approach to lessening the risk
coal ash ponds pose to the environment.
The water treatment system is proven
to be extremely effective and this plan
of action will be very beneficial in the
long run. The alternative is waiting for
the inevitable flood or leak that will
expose our precious environment to
