From the President & CEO A s we collectively begin to close on another year, it is often our instinct to spend time reflecting on our accomplishments. While 2016 saw WIB continue to execute its three-pronged strategy designed to help banks develop best practices and outstanding leaders, it is the focus of this - our future of community banking issue - that serves as the driving force behind the exciting developments we have for you, our members, in 2017. 2017 promises to be a banner year for Western Independent Bankers as we celebrate our 80th anniversary, and we are eager to share the journey with you. From rolling out enhanced member benefits to implementing success-driven initiatives, WIB remains committed to delivering multichannel platforms that support the growth of your employees and the sustainability of your institution. Today, the majority of community banks find themselves concerned with where the next generation of leaders will come from and how to attract long-term talent to the industry. As a result, the succession plans of many banks have been challenged as the pool of both banks and employees has been reduced. Because WIB is run by bankers for bankers, we understand the fundamental importance of longevity and have countered this industry-specific challenge with two new initiatives. First, we are proud to announce the launch of the Community Bank College Outreach Initiative. This unique program is designed specifically to help banks recruit and retain future leaders by forging relationships with universities and engaging millennials. As detailed in my article, "March of the Millennials: Cultivating Relationships Within the Digital Era," community banks have the ability to appeal to this, the largest portion of the population, and change how a generation perceives banking. Our second initiative is focused on Emerging Leaders in Banking, providing the rising stars of member banks with the core curriculum necessary to advance their expertise and broaden networking opportunities. This program gives community banks the executive-level education necessary to reward and retain top performers. In 2017, each WIB member bank will be able to select one such employee to send to our WIB Emerging Leaders Conference. The conference registration is included in the 2017 bank member dues. In addition, we will be offering an outstanding 11-month Executive Development Program in multiple locations throughout the West Coast, designed specifically for the C-level bankers of tomorrow. At WIB, we are constantly forecasting and analyzing retail banking trends. As customers demand increased efficiency and mobility from their banks, the move towards unbundling branded apps has proven to be a necessity. Community banks, in particular, have found it difficult to compete in the mobile market, which is why we have recently launched the WIB App Store; here, member banks can enjoy the benefits of apps without the engineering and long-term contracts that have kept community banks in the margins of this fundamental service. The strength of the WIB App Store is its flexibility, allowing banks to select apps from a storefront with ease and with the convenience of full automation. This one-of-a-kind service is exclusive to our members and represents the high-impact solutions that WIB offers to our network of banks. I welcome the opportunity to discuss all of this and more with you at our 2017 Annual Conference for bank presidents, senior officers and directors. Held from March 25-29 on the beautiful island of Honolulu, this will be the conference's 60th anniversary, and we are excited to provide you with a powerhouse schedule full of industry resources and presentations from leading experts. This is always a successful event, and I truly hope that you will take advantage of the many peer connections this conference fosters.
