Wellness report Spa case studies Point of difference A spotlight on four standout spas Rancho La Puerta Location: Tecate, Baja California, Mexico Spa size: 17,177ft2 (1,596m2) Features: On-site organic farm and orchard provide ingredients for spa treatments and most of the restaurant’s fruit and vegetable needs, wide range of classes (from yoga to bird-watching). On offer: The spa has four Health Centers featuring wet and lounge areas and 43 treatment rooms. Spa menu includes massage, facials, body masks and wraps, reflexology, hydrotherapy and aromatherapy. Treatments: $45-$145 Why it’s good: Rancho La Puerta is the grandfather of destination spas in North America. Spa treatments incorporate herbs and plants grown on the spa’s organic farmland. Through its association, Fundacion La Puerta, the spa works with and supports the local community. What could be improved: The spa has a rustic heritage, so the latest technologies are not to be expected. La Grée des Landes, Yves Rocher Eco-Hotel & Spa Location: La Gacilly, France Spa size: 300m2 (3,229ft2) Features: Pool, hammam, baths, four treatment rooms, tea room. On offer: Signature two-hour body treatments, massage, facials. Treatments: €40- €115 Why it’s good: Good value for money. The spa has strong environmental initiatives (water from the spa is reed-filtered) and the complex is carbon-neutral, according to the company. A garden and orchard supply the restaurant, while medicinal plants and herbs from the garden are used in treatments and in the tea room. What could be improved: Rooms have no bathtubs (due to ecological imperatives), and the spa doesn’t have a sauna. Some guests have criticized service in the dining area for being over-bearing.
