Spa case studies Wellness Local touch Location: Nefta, Tunisia Size: Hotel complex: 2,347m2 (25,262ft2); spa: 120m2 (1,291ft2) On offer: Geothermal heated pool and hammam, meditation room Treatments: Massage, wraps, scrubs, essential oil bath Brand used: REN Why it’s different: Dar Hi is an ecologically conceived hotel nestled in the Tunisian desert, which was designed by French architect Matali Crasset. Created to be in tune with its desert environs, the hotel offers four types of rooms: on stilts overlooking an oasis, troglodyte-type made of bricks, dune-level and the traditional village house. The spa, Hi Body and Soul, covers around 120m2 (1,291ft2) and uses energy from its surroundings: a hot water spring flows under the building providing warm pool water and generating heat for the hammam, or steam bath. The spa treatments use UK organic brand REN combined with local ingredients. For example, warm desert sand is incorporated into some treatments, salt from the nearby Chott el Djerid lake is used for scrubs and foot treatments, wraps feature local clay and dates, while facials use either red or green clay from the region. Traditional Arabic massage is at the heart of the offer, but Thai or Ayurvedic massage are also available. A rose essential oil bath is one of the spa’s signature treatments. The spa has two treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge and a spacious hammam and can also be booked for Yoga and Ayurvedic retreats. Four spas with a unique twist on the business Hi Body and Soul spa at the Dar Hi hotel The Surrey Spa Location: New York City, US Size: 2,500ft2 (232m2) On offer: Customized treatments for each guest Treatments: Massage, body and facial treatments Brands used: Darphin, Li’tya Why it’s different: The Surrey Spa takes privacy to a new level for an urban hotel spa—there are no changing rooms or big reception area and the entire spa experience takes place inside the treatment room, of which there are five. Upon arrival, guests meet with a ‘coordinator’ or the spa director to determine the course of treatment depending on their needs and the time they have. The menu is also priced according to time increments and not per treatment. The spa works with two brands: skincare specialist Darphin and Li’tya, an Australian organic line. The Surrey is Darphin’s flagship New York City spa, says spa director Cheryl Jacobs, and the brand created its rose pomegranate facial especially for the spa. Li’tya’s signature treatment is the Mala Mayi, which includes a salt and oil scrub, scalp massage, mud wrap and body massage. The Surrey prides itself on its experienced therapists—all staff must have worked for at least three years in a highlevel spa and are qualified to administer a wide variety of treatments.
