Wellness Spa case studies Seoul spa BW Confidential spotlights two of South Korea’s premier luxury hotel spas by Alissa Demorest Location: Seoul, South Korea Size: 592m2 (6,372ft2) On offer: Rainmist room, steam room, traditional soaking tub Treatments: Massage, body scrub, herbal steam, herbal bath Brand used: Banyan Tree Why it’s different: The spa is housed in Banyan Tree’s hotel overlooking Mount Namsan near central Seoul—an oasis of greenery, according to the hotel operator. The spa features nine double treatment rooms and two suites. Each room has a rainmist room, shower, steam room and tub. Spa therapists are said to take a “holistic and non-clinical” approach to the spa experience and treatments use freshly blended local ingredients. The spa menu features 90-minute signature scrubs, which are recommended as a prelude to massage. On offer are three scrubs for women and three for men, with each catering to dry, normal or oily skin. Scrubs include ingredients such as pearl powder, ginseng and apple oatmeal for women and sandalwood, tumeric, salt and ginger lemon for men. Treatment packages offer a blend of facial and body services and include Banyan Romance—an herbal steam, sports massage, Korean green tea scrub, head massage and a soak in a Korea green tea bath. The Royal Banyan package incorporates a ‘pouch massage’, which uses an herbal pouch dipped in warm oil to boost blood circulation and ease tense muscles and the jade face massage to promote radiant skin. Banyan Tree Club & Spa Seoul Thémaé, Ritz Carlton Location: Seoul, South Korea Size: N/A On offer: Korean bathing, signature tea-based treatments Treatments: Facials, massage, scrubs Brands used: Thémaé Why it’s different: Thémaé’s spa experience is based on the use of tea in all of its rituals and products, which fits in well with Korea’s tea culture. Located in the Ritz Carlton hotel in Seoul’s Gangnam financial district, the spa, which opened last February, is the brand’s first franchise to launch in Asia. The location features four treatment rooms, including a double and two traditional wooden Korean baths. For this spa, the Paris-based operator created signature treatments including a one-hour Korean massage and the Korean Empress Ceremony, a combination of massage and facial. During the two-hour signature treatments, clients can have a soak in the traditional wooden bath. The tea used in the massage and scrub treatments is said to come from Korea’s Jiri Mountains. Thémaé also retails a complete line of tea-based facial and bodycare products at the spa. Thémaé is currently developing its franchise activity with a focus on high-end hotel spas worldwide. 42 September-October 2012 - N°11 - BW Confidential
