Emerging trends
I
ndustry executives have begun to show a
little more caution over emerging markets.
In Brazil, the economy has slowed and some
market players said 2012 was challenging
there—although the second half looked
brighter than the beginning of the year. In
China, warnings of a slowdown over the past
two to three years finally began to be taken
more seriously at the end of 2012, and some
groups admitted that growth, especially in
first-tier cities, had begun to weaken.
However, analysts say that all this is a minor blip for emerging markets
and that these countries will continue to be a growth driver for beauty. In
our interview in this issue, Brazilian group Natura executive vice president
José Vicente Marino says that despite slower GDP growth, the beauty
market is set for expansion, driven by the country’s swelling middle classes
and consumers’ higher incomes. Brazilians traveling beyond their borders
are also forecast to continue to be a major force in the duty-free market, as
our report on this passenger profile shows.
As for China, despite a somewhat more tempered analysis of the market
there at the end of the year, recent data shows that growth rates are
beginning to pick up again. And some of the major groups are still keen to
point out that any slowdown in growth didn’t mean no growth, but rather
increases in the 15% instead of the 20-25% range.
Even in India, which had been dismissed as a little too complicated for
immediate focus by some, is back on the radar for others. LVMH-owned
perfumery chain Sephora invested in the country with the opening of
its first store there at the end of December last year, while L’Oréal just
announced that it would open a new research and development center in
India and is investing €140m there between 2011 and 2016.
Emerging markets are likely to remain growth engines for beauty for
some time to come. But even if the majors don’t seem to worry about
small downward inflexions in the growth curve there, many challenges
remain—not least when it comes to measuring the returns so far on the
huge investment being made and when business will be profitable.
