Update News recap Strategy In brief L’Oréal in acquisition mode Beauty group L’Oréal made two emerging-market acquisitions in the space of a month. The group made its first acquisition in India with the purchase of Mumbai-based professional skincare company Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals (pictured). The company markets skincare products and treatment services in more than 10,000 beauty salons in India. It reported sales of around €3m last year. Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals will join L’Oréal India’s Professional Products division, which already markets the L’Oréal Professional, Matrix and Kerastase brands in the country. The deal came just one month after L’Oréal announced it would buy Chinese cosmetic facial mask specialist Magic Holdings. The company’s MG brand is said to be a category leader in China. Magic Holdings reported sales of around €150m in 2012. Also on the acquisition front, L’Oréal is to buy men’s skincare brand Nickel from French company Interparfums, in a deal to close at the end of the year. Interparfums bought Nickel in 2004, but has been disappointed with the performance of the men’s grooming market for some time. In addition to its skincare products, Nickel operates two spas, one in Paris, France and another in New York, US. Victoria’s Secret opens more travel retail stores US-based lingerie and beauty retailer Victoria’s Secret has opened three new airport Beauty & Accessories stores in partnership with travel retailer Nuance. This fall, the brand will open a new location in St Petersburg, also in partnership with Nuance. International flavor at MakeUp in Paris Paris-based trade show organizer Beauteam held its fourth edition of MakeUp in Paris this June. Organizers said the show had a more international flavor this year. Visitor numbers reached 2,517 (an 18% increase on the 2012 edition) and the number of visitors from outside France rose by 110%. The majority of foreign visitors came from Italy, Germany, South Korea and Japan. “Not only did we have more visitors this year, but they were more qualified professionals from high-end brands and retailers,” commented Beauteam founder Jean-Yves Bourgeois. In terms of exhibitors, some 90 companies took booths, versus 65 last year. This year’s edition featured 10 conferences, and a new area devoted to ingredients called MakeUPigments, which spotlighted the products of three suppliers: Merck, BASF and Laserson. Another event, MakeUParade, had make-up school students wearing the latest looks strolling through the exhibition. 18 French brand Chanel has announced that Julien Gommichen, currently general manager and managing director for Chanel Middle East and India, will succeed Christine Dagousset in the role of executive vice president Fragrance & Beauté in the US. He will report directly to US president and ceo John Galantic. Chanel announced earlier this year that Dagousset will take on the role of global deputy general manager Fragrance & Beauté in January 2014, and will be named global president of the division in 2015. Spain-based Perfumes y Diseño has signed a fragrance license with French designer and architect Philippe Starck. Perfumes y Diseño’s other brands include J del Pozo, Roberto Verino and Tous. Quebec-based beauty company Lise Watier Cosmétiques founder Lise Watier and her husband and company president Serge Rocheleau are leaving the company. Pierre Plassard, most recently general manager France at online travel agency voyageprive. com, has been appointed president and ceo. Since 2007, the company has been majority owned by investment company Imperial Capital Corporation. Swiss fragrance house Firmenich has appointed Olivier de Lisle svp fine fragrances.
