Interview with Frédéric Beaumont,
head of the CESEM program

WORK CULTURE
Dr Hannah Joos (CESEM 12), Project Leader,
Boston Consulting Group
Having worked in both Germany and France - she
did a 6-month internship in Strasbourg as part of
her CESEM degree - Hannah Joos values the
German work culture: " In France the structure inside
companies is often hierarchical, whereas in Germany
it feels more horizontal " she says. Now based in
Munich where she is a Project Leader for The
Boston Consulting Group, she works with publishing
houses, TV broadcasters, platform businesses or
even soccer clubs, focusing on innovation to create
new business models that generate growth: " In
today's world, a lot of companies need to reinvent
themselves, particularly in the media space. New
business verticals like audio, learning, communities
or experiences like events and guided vacations are
possibilities to generate growth next to the core
business, and I really enjoy identifying them together
with my clients " she adds. Another thing she
appreciates is the opportunity to travel around the
country: " If I was doing the same job in France I
would mostly stay in Paris. But because big companies
in Germany are spread out in different cities, I
end up travelling almost every week " she explains.
She also likes coming back to Munich, not the most
famous party city in Germany, but a great place to
live: " There are mountains and lakes nearby, and
Italy as well as Austria are easily accessible. Also, the
city is becoming more international, and a really nice
start-up scene is developing " she says.

When was the partnership with ESB Business School created?
Our first agreement to create a double degree program, Track,
was signed with Germany in 1978. At that time, dual degrees
were very rare. There were around 30 students per academic
year, sometimes more. Over the last 40 years, around 2 500
alumni graduated. Since the program was built with the support
of the Franco-German University (UFA), students can get a
scholarship to cover part of their costs during the two years they
spend in Germany.
How is the program structured?
Just like for other CESEM programs, students spend the first
two years studying in France, and the following two years in
Germany. We have a special agreement with a few students who
do the reverse, the first two years in Germany and the following
two in France. The advantage is that they follow the German
students who then come and study in France with them. In
general, two-thirds of the teachings are in the local language,
the last third in English.
Can you tell us a little bit more about ESB?
The International Management Double Degree (IMX) with
ESB has been ranked number one in Germany for 30 years.
It represents an amazing opportunity for our students, who are
usually outstanding. Among our graduates, around one third is
working in France, another third in Germany or Austria and the
rest worldwide, especially in audit, finance, and marketing.
