DISRUPT YOURSELF!
ILAN BENHAIM (PGE 01), CURRENT PRESIDENT OF NEOMA ALUMNI AND JAY SAMIT, SERIAL
ENTREPRENEUR AND AUTHOR OF " DISRUPT YOURSELF " SHARE THEIR INSIGHTS INTO
ACHIEVING YOUR PERSONAL AND BUSINESS GOALS AND LAUNCH YOUR OWN START-UP.
Ilan Benhaim (PGE 01),
President, NEOMA Alumni
" EVERYONE'S CAREER IS GOING
TO BE DISRUPTED "
Disrupting yourself has to do with your attitude.
Starting the day with " Today can be better than
yesterday and I have the power to make it so "
makes you see possibilities.
You must get past your fear of failure. Most cultures
have a fear of shame and failure but the only
thing you should be ashamed of is giving up. " One
differentiator that helps Americans keep innovating
despite their terrible education system is that
they have no shame. " There is no excuse for why
you can't create a unicorn because globalization
and digital tools give you access to customers
everywhere. " Billionaires and entrepreneurs are
just more stubborn than you " states Jay Samit,
who places perseverance at the heart of successful
entrepreneurship.
Jay Samit, serial entrepreneur,
former Deloitte vice-chairman
and Executive Vice President
at Sony Corporation of
America, is also a keynote
speaker and writes books that
help you reach your personal
and business goals through
innovation and change. With
Disrupt yourself, he is
teaching you how to get past
your limitations.
HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL
ENTREPRENEUR?
You must learn how to communicate with people.
It is not their job to understand your ideas, it is for
you to convey them. Success lies in getting inside
your data faster than the competition gets inside
theirs. Getting feedback from potential customers
enables you to determine whether you should
stick with your idea or drop it. The market provides
insight, it is never the market's fault if your service
or product does not work out.
Disruption occurs again when it comes to scaling
up your business. Industrializing your processes to
sell more products has an impact on their quality.
The only solution is to do things completely
differently.
You have to commit to lifelong learning, whether
you learn from the market or partners. You cannot
fly solo to launch your start-up. You're going to
need a series of mentors your entire career. You
also should partner with people who have the
strengths you lack. Launching your start-up or
entrepreneurial project while you are young is
highly recommended because you do not have
any constraint yet.
On a more tangible note, Ilan Benhaim shares
THE hard skill that you should develop: spend two
months of your life learning how to code. Why?
Because you will need basic coding knowledge to
communicate with engineers. (See page 48 the
launch of NEOMA's coding school!)
HOW TO FUND YOUR PROJECT?
Behavioral traits are also key to find investors.
According to Ilan Benhaim, " when I invest in companies,
I'm looking for people who admit their mistakes. "
But what do you do when you can't seem to
find investors? Jay Samit conceptualized two types
of funds, investor money and OPM (Other People's
Money). If you solve how a company can reach its
audience, it will give you money. Jay Samit was in
charge of helping Sony Music build their own version
of Apple's Itunes but had no money to do so.
He searched for a company which had a problem.
McDonald's sales were going down. Therefore, he
approached the company and pitched them the
idea of a partnership. A TV Commercial, the tagline
of which was " Buy a Big Mac, get a free track " was
launched. On the first week the ad was released,
McDonalds drove 20 million paying customers to
Sony's website.
To conclude, Jay Samit is encouraging people to
become entrepreneurs. As he states in one of his
witty punchlines: " Most jobs pay you enough to
show up and not enough to care. Why not put that
effort into something that gives you freedom? " ❚
