situation because they will obtain the work permit
for you. Otherwise, you can get it through your
partner if he or she works in the country " explains
Marine Pignon. " Headhunters rarely consider
executives from France since they have enough
people on the market there. The best option would
be to get an offer while you are still in your home
country " confirms Thibaut Chapron (CESEM 12).
Another reason for finding a job before coming to
Switzerland is that living in the country is so
expensive that your savings may run down quickly.
As an example, kindergarten for children costs
between 2,000 and 3,000 euros a month, health
insurance around 400 euros and a two-bedroom
apartment in Geneva around 4,000: " In Switzerland,
the " double income no kids " lifestyle is the
best because you spend a fortune as soon as you
have children! This is why some women give up
their job after their second children, unless they
make enough money to afford a kika, the Swiss
kindergarten " explains Thibaut Chapron.
AN ECONOMY LARGELY BASED ON
THE SERVICE SECTOR
Even with a work permit, finding opportunities in
certain industries may be challenging: " Once you
have a first job experience in Switzerland, things
get easier but entering the market is complicated.
One of my friends, who is now the head of communications
in a palace, searched for a job for two
years before finding her current position " says
Floria Mignot (PGE 10).
Finance is one of the sectors that offers the most
opportunities. If most of the French expats live in
the francophone part of the country, many opportunities
are also to be found in the German-speaking
part of the Swiss confederation, particularly in
Zurich and Basel. Thibaut Chapron, who fell in love
with Switzerland in 2010 during an internship,
found a position as procurement partner in AG in
the largest city of the country: " Zurich is the global
banking and finance center. Most of the opportunities
are in these sectors but there are also jobs
in IT. For instance, Google's apps, engineering,
R&D, controlling and insurance business lines are
headquartered in Zurich " he explains.
Indeed, many multinationals are based in Switzerland
because of the favorable tax conditions of the
country. If Nestle is the largest company in the
Swiss-confederation in terms of number of
employees, there are also other large firms such as
Glencore International, Credit Suisse, Adecco,
Roche, ABB or Novartis. National companies are
also recruiting. 99% of them are SMEs that employ
less than 250 staff. Finally, the long tradition of
neutrality of the country has attracted many international
organizations and NGOs, which have
installed their headquarters in Geneva.
A RIGOROUS AND STRUCTURED WORK
MINDSET
If the Swiss work environment may not be the
most innovative, with long work hours and a rather
formal and conservative approach to business,
especially in the German-speaking side of the
country, Thibault Chapron deems Zurich as " one of
the most open-minded Swiss cities " as well as " one
of the most livable places on earth " . What he
enjoys about the German-speaking city are reaching
lakes every 15km and easily accessible mountains,
as well a large community of French expats.
However, if you can get by in English in the international
banking sector, you must speak German
to work in a Swiss company in Zurich or Basel.
Basel, the third largest city in the country, is also
one of the most dynamic. There are opportunities
in the chemical, pharmaceutical and medical technology
industries. So, if you are inclined to go to
Switzerland for a short experience or to make the
country your home, options are numerous, if you
follow the rules! ❚

THE ALUMNI TRIBE IN SWITZERLAND
With four active tribes in Geneva, Zurich, Lausanne and Basel and over
1000 members, the NEOMA community in Switzerland is dynamic and
events are taking place again after a two-year break due to COVID: " We are
used to hosting more than one event per moth with as many as 50
participants just for Geneva but at the moment, things are slowly restarting
after the pandemic " says Floria Migniot, a member of the Geneva and
Lausanne tribes, and Board Member of NEOMA Alumni. If most of the
gatherings are festive, themed evenings on business-related topics are
also organized, such as workshops on the chocolate and diamond industries,
a Hublot factory tour or a conference on the Swiss job market. In
Lausanne, Marine Pignon has organized around
10 afterwork events since 2019. Their average audience is made up of
15 alumni, who live between Lausanne and Montreux. Living in Zurich
since 2016, Thibaut Chapron has been pretty creative, organizing an
escape game, a bowling evening or a joint event with the ESCP/ESSEC/
HEC alumni networks at the Lucerne Panorama: " The average attendance
is around 10 people but there are always new people joining in " he
comments.
