The duties of ‘moniteur’ In return for the advantages provided by the ‘moniteur’ system, the ‘moniteur’ undertakes to: >> Teach undergraduate students for a total annual period (presence in front of students) of 64 hours of seminar-type sessions or 96 hours of practical / laboratory work. It is up to the establishment which recruited the ‘moniteur’ to appoint them to a particular teaching service. (Only by special dispensation, authorised by the director of the Centre d’Initiation à l’Enseignement Supérieur upon the explicit request of the ‘moniteur’ and their tutor, and only for a total of one year, may it be possible for teaching to be carried out elsewhere than with undergraduates.) >> Take part in the activities provided by training courses organised by the CIES on the basis of 10 days a year. Attendance of these courses is compulsory, and takes precedence over other activities. The directors of the CIES have received instructions to terminate the contract of any ‘moniteur’ (whether ‘normalien’ or not) who does not attend them. Evaluation of these courses by ‘moniteurs’ is an important element of their appropriateness to needs assessment. >> Maintain regular contact with their tutor. If the appointment of a tutor has been forgotten, or has been done so hastily that the tutorial system’s interest has not been taken into account, the CIES must be informed, and this latter, together with the host establishment, will try to find a solution. Here are some examples of possible assignments: > Technical training, e.g. business objectives, and relational database administration > Methodological training: formalisation of clients’ needs, specifications / terms of reference for a decision-making project with management charts and performance indicators > Scientific training in a specific field / Scientific consultancy work (accompaniment) > Documentary research > Technology watch > Short-term project management > Software development, e.g. development of a network hypervisor based on Nagios open source monitoring > Life-cycle analysis, and ecological assessment > Market analysis > Surveys, e.g. sociological and consumer > Tourist traffic study > Technical feasibility of a prototype > Sample analysis 4.5 Doctoral students as research assistants in business The ‘doctorant-conseil’ system has been recently established by the Ministry in order to promote links between doctoral students and businesses. It involves the doctoral students putting their skills into practice to enhance their training and to prepare them for their future professional life. This system invites them to conduct appraisals, audits, or other assignments in a business for 32 days. Contact your doctoral schools for further information p.6-11
