FORUM OF ADVERTISERS Above E-invoicing E-invoicing means “sending of invoices ‘by electronic means’ i.e. transmission or making available to the receiver and storage using electronic equipment for processing (including digital compression) and storage of data, and employing wires, radio transmission, optical technologies and other electromagnetic means”. ecent studies and cases demonstrate that E-invoicing could significantly enhance efficiency by reducing costs of handling invoices up to 80% (current savings estimation around 240 billion Euros). The argumentation developed by the promoters of E-invoicing in order stimulate switching from the current paper based invoicing method to the electronic one, is based on the open market and competitive environment initiative in the European Union through: G R is enough competition to facilitate an open competitive market. Moreover, it’s important to consider that the Payment Services Directive (PSD) would have contained the Einvoicing regulation as an additional chapter, if some lobbies hadn’t pushed it out! The realisation and success of the Einvoicing initiative is based on some pre-requisites: G on a European level in order to build an integrated European market for payment services that is subject to effective cross-border competition. Digitalisation and dematerialisation are additional services to endclients that help reducing the overall payment costs. The SEPA schemes will enable E-invoicing participants to take rapidly advantage of these benefits in the global value chain. SEPA as such can’t accelerate the adoption of E-invoicing, unless SEPA will be widely adopted by banks in Europe, which currently is not the case as only 3% of the overall payment volumes use SEPA. There is a series of issues that affects the banks’ P/Ls and justify their reluctance to adopt SEPA: G Generalised interoperability; Harmonised legal and tax environment, creation of invoicing and related processes standards; Wide choice of solutions / nonproprietary systems in order to avoid vendor locked-in; Structured cross-European invoices; Respect of standards such as SEPA. G Improving competitiveness through digitalisation of the business processes; Achieving cost savings through reduction of manual workload and repetitive tasks; Supporting the achievement of the Single Market.
