little over a year ago, as is customary, the JEC Awards jury
was tasked with making a
choice between quite a few applications. It's not a simple task. Among the
ten award winners, the CF3D patented tech¬nology presented by Continuous Composites (US) stands out in
my mind. This continu¬ous fibre solution combines composite ma¬terials
with a 3D printing process, creating a
mouldless out-of-autoclave process,
resulting in a drastic reduction in cost
and lead times. The combination of
techniques offers many advantages,
specifically reduced equipment investments and the capacity to produce
complex designs. It's highly likely that
the in¬novation is a foreshadowing
of the factory of the future, which will
draw on powerful tech¬nology like
3D printing, involve robotics, and be
extremely adaptable.
The strength of these recent technologies and their disruptive potential with
respect to how production is organised
have led us to create this digest dedicated to additive manufactur¬ing. The
global additive manufacturing sector is
experiencing exponential growth, and
the market recorded 9% p.a. over the
period from 1995 to 2009 and 28%
p.a. since 2009. In the next five years,
it is expected to grow at a rate of 23%
per year. To date, this market is valued
at nearly 20 billion dollars, for all technologies, all materials and all sectors
combined.
In this digest, we have naturally concentrated on the composite materials
sector, which is not negligible, even
when limiting the focus to the seven
processes defined by ASTM Tech¬nical Committee 42 in 2012. Today,
this clas¬sification is the industry

in the composites field, we highlight
two main process categories. The first
is Auto¬mated Tape Laying (ATL)
and Automated Fi¬bre Placement
(AFP)-usually discussed to¬gether
as the processes are similar; the second
is 3D printing of fibre-reinforced composites, a complex, fragmented and
diversified world in itself. A significant
part of the digest is also consecrated to
the additive manufacturing market, its
evolution and its penetration into various sectors of application.
Thirty some technical articles will enable you to gain a better understanding of this strong trend which will,
I'm convinced, bring major changes
to our current production methods.
Through these examples, it's thrilling
to ob¬serve how quickly the composites industry is evolving. To meet new
expectations, the industry has swung
into motion, concerned with improving efficiency from the product design
phase, through production, all the way
to integration into complex assemblies.
Other related topics work in favour
of these processes. For example, efficiency of exe¬cution and quality: automated and very re¬sponsive, once
programmed there's very little room
for error. Respect for the environment
is another area where the processes
shine, since they generate less production waste and oftentimes such
wastes are reusable. Fi¬nally, additive
manufacturing processes are compatible with the Industry 4.0 movement.
One might even think that they were
invented specifically for it. But I'll stop
there, otherwise you may believe I'm
trying to sell you some¬thing, beyond
convincing you that additive manufacturing represents a source of growth for
composites and companies in the sector. I'll conclude by saying that I hope
