COMPANIES COMPANIES Gurit inaugurates production plant in China Gurit has officially inaugurated its new purpose-built production facility in China. The new production site is located in Yat-Sen Scientific Industrial Park, Wuqing, Tianjin. Since ground-breaking in late November 2006, the wholly owned sub-sidiary Gurit (Tianjin) Composite Materials Co., Ltd. was completed well within the targeted time frame and planned budget for building and machinery costs of CHF 18 million. The production facility today comprises a building complex of 10,000m2. Located on 30,000m2 of land, Gurit (Tianjin) may thus be expanded further in the years ahead. Currently, Gurit employs some 100 people and operates two prepreg lines as well as various expansion ovens and kitting lines for structural foam products. The kitting of structural foam products had started in China already in April and has now been relocated into the Group’s own buildings. Additional 40 people will join Gurit (Tianjin) by the end of the year. When in full use, Gurit (Tian-jin) will produce a turnover of about CHF 50 million. Gurit (Tianjin) also supplies ad-ditional materials such as specially form-ulated epoxy resins or gel coats that are manufactured at other Gurit production sites. www.gurit.com Purchase of GE Plastics by Saudi Basic Industries Corporation Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) announced the completion of its purchase of GE Plastics from General Electric for price of US$11.6 billion. The former GE unit is now SABIC Innovative Plastics, a new business addition to SABIC that will focus on the global growth of thermo-plastics and engineering plastics through innovation to serve the automotive, elec-tronics, healthcare, and construction sectors. Brian Gladden has been appointed CEO of SABIC Innovative Plastics. “This acquisition will significantly broaden SABIC’s plastics product portfolio and provide access to new global markets. The people, products and technologies of SABIC Innovative Plastics bring a legacy of material innovation and expertise that I believe will enable SABIC to further strengthen and grow its position as a world-class leader in the plastics industry. We will maintain our commitment to the people, communities and facilities that have contributed to this worldclass organization”, he said. www.sabic.com Amitech supplies FRP pipes to small hydroelectric plants in Brazil for US$ 750,000 Amitech has entered in a deal to supply 1.128 m of fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) pipes – budgeted in US$ 750,000 – to the small hydroelectric plants of Pequi and Sucupira in the Brazilian city of Jaciara.
