KNOW-HOW Materials An out-of-autoclave composite solution SPRINT® is a patented composite technology designed to manufacture autoclave-quality components using only a rudimentary oven and vacuum bag. Mechanical performance By its chemical nature, epoxy inherently offers a better combination of strength, strain, adhesion and fatigue performance than polyester or vinylester. However additional performance gains can be achieved with SPRINT formulations relative to wet laminating epoxies. This is because the semi-solid nature of SPRINT matrices means they have no need to incorporate lower performance ‘diluents’ to speed up the fibre wet out, as this will happen naturally during the SPRINT cure cycle as elevated temperature drops the resin viscosity. This allows use of higher performance epoxy molecules capable of producing significantly higher load bearing capability on the same reinforcement. Weight is also reduced by the ability to accurately control resin content and produce laminates, which are consistently lighter, stiffer and stronger. The combination of low void content from the SPRINT process and higher performance from the lack of chemical compromise produces substantial increases in laminate mechanical propertie. NICK PARTINGTON, GURIT PRODUCT MANAGER, PREPREG & SPRINT® SPRINT® was developed by SP the marine business of Gurit, and , stands for SP Resin Infusion Technology - but it is much more than just a clever acronym A typical SPRINT® material can be described as a “composite sandwich”, with the latent epoxy resin film being the filling and dry fibre reinforcements being the bread. Fig. 1: SPRINT® schematic How does it work? SPRINT® takes advantage of the fact that, due to their continuous nature and generally consistent shape and diameter, the fibres in most commercially-available woven and multiaxial fabrics work extremely well as breathing media. This means that when a vacuum is applied to a dry reinforcement, the imperfect packing and continuous nature of the fibres allow for excellent air transport so long as the fibres are connected to the vacuum source. This is the basic principle by which SPRINT® materials operate. Using the structural reinforcements to initially remove any air from the laminate before heating the resin into a hard composite structure means that there is no air present to create voids in the laminate when the resin starts to flow and wet the fibres out. Thanks to this approach, the laminate quality is on a par with autoclave components. Fig. 2: Mechanical vs wet lamination: compressive strength on glass fabric & carbon fabric Reducing labour costs Essential to making a cost-effective composite material is the deposition rate of the material into the mould, which must be high to keep labour costs to a minimum. This is one area where highend composite materials such as prepregs have historically struggled to compete with wet laminating/ choppergun application techniques.
