BUSINESS Trends Subcontracting in aviation: a rapidly changing sector As certain EADS/Airbus sites are switching ownership or being subsidiarized, the whole aviation subcontracting landscape is changing. Every day, the industrial plan grows more and more to resemble the one in the automotive sector, with OEMs and tier-one partners. s we start this new year, the scope of activity for EADS/Airbus has evolved considerably. As a result, the aviation subcontracting landscape is also changing – especially as concerns aerostructures, an area where EADS/Airbus has reorganized, transferring ownership of some companies/sites and subsidiarizing others. This initiative includes the divestment of non-core sites and activities to establish a strong supplier network, so that Airbus can focus on its core business as an aircraft architect and integrator. Here is an overview of the new players. A GKN Aerospace - Filton In early January, GKN Aerospace completed the acquisition of the Filton site’s wing-component manufacturing and assembly unit in Great Britain. This acquisition places GKN Aerospace as the major independent supplier of aerostructures in Europe and one of the leading three operations globally. GKN Aerospace is a world technology leader in the application of composites in aviation and has been closely involved in pioneering the growing use of composites in aircraft wings throughout the past decade. Filton has 1,500 employees, bringing the company’s global workforce to 10,000. GKN Aerospace - Filton will be the focus of the Company’s A350 XWB participation. A new dedicated composite manufacturing facility will use the latest in automated composite manufacturing technologies to produce the A350 XWB wing trailing edge and wing spar and assemblies. This acquisition, with the associated life of programme contracts and A350XWB work package, doubles the GKN Aerospace order book for large civil aircraft structures. Laupheim As part of its Power 8 plan, EADS sold the Laupheim site in Germany to Diehl/Thales on October 1, 2008. With 1,100 employees, Laupheim was the Airbus site that specialized in onboard fittings and trim panels (cabin, crew rest areas, air ducting, and stowage bins). The Laupheim site also has notable design and programme management capabilities. manages its operations as an independently operated company headquartered in Augsburg. It has a workforce of more than 6,000 employees and expects to achieve revenues of around € 1 billion in 2009. Premium Aerotec’s core business will focus on the design and manufacturing of metal and CFRP aerostructures and the related manufacturing systems. The company has set itself the target to be the leading supplier for both commercial and military aerostructures within the next few years. To enhance composite technologies in first order, and also for further technological development, EADS will invest around € 500 million in the Premium Aerotec sites in 2009-2011. Aerolia A similar process is going on in France, where Méaulte and Saint-Nazaire Ville are now bases for Aerolia. Under EADS, Aerolia is now fully operational (since January 1, 2009), and also wellpositioned to become a major player in the global market, in particular for composite aerostructures. Its integrated industrial activities have always enabled strong business and industrial relations with the big names in aviation, like Airbus, ATR, Bombardier, Latécoère, Sonaca, Sogerma, Stork Fokker, Piaggio, SAAB, and SABCA. Certified to EN 9100 and ISO 14001, Aerolia began targeting the global aircraft construction market as soon as it was created. The company is committed to supporting the development of its customers, either as a production partner Premium Aerotec GmbH The subsidiarization of Airbus’ former German sites at Nordenham and Varel, and of EADS’ former site at Augsburg in order to create Premium Aerotec GmbH was completed in late 2008. Operations started with legal effect on January 1, 2009. The business activities of the three sites have now been transferred to the new company. Although Premium Aerotec is a wholly-owned subsidiary of EADS, it Specialized production site (A380 wing at Broughton, UK). 22 jec composites magazine / No49 June 2009 © EADS Photo Library - CD-ROM 2007
