USERS’ PLATFORM Composites in the world An a s t o n i s h i n g chair In close co-operation with Huntsman Advanced Materials, the 3D company designed an astonishing yet sophisticated chair made of carbon fibre and moulded in four parts. Various Huntsman materials were used: the SV/HV 4503-1 seamless modelling paste, the Araldite® LY564/Aradur® 3487 epoxy resin system, the Araldite® 420 high-toughness epoxy adhesive, and the most recent addition to the Araldite® 2000 Plus range, Araldite® 2031 which is a resilient, general-purpose black epoxy adhesive selected for its superior stability and structural flexibility. Some of the removable parts of the infusion moulds were made with the RenShape® SL 7810 stereolithography resin by Creaxia, a wellknown French prototyping company. This chair was designed by Patrick Jouin, one of the most prominent French designers today. Its curved form effortlessly absorbs the user’s weight. This chair has been selected by a prestigious Parisian restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide. With the choice of materials for EDAG's "Light Car - Open Source", emphasis is also placed on innovative solutions. Apart from the glass surfaces or alternatively Makrolon, the material of the future, the structure of the vehicle predominantly uses an innovative, industrially-standardised basalt fibre (ASA.TEC fibre). This 100%-recyclable, almost infinitely-available raw material is not just lighter and cheaper than aluminium or carbon, but also has practically the same strength properties as conventional materials. This new quality of basalt fibre, which is to be used in the construction of rotors for large-scale wind power plants in the future, can now be put to systematic use in the automotive industry. This type of basalt fibre therefore has the potential for becoming a main structural element and thus being used as a future lightweight material in cars for the highvolume market.
