JEC COMPOSITES MAGAZINE - Issue #49 - June 2009 - 55

AN INTERVIEW WITH ERIK STENING, ARCHITECTURAL SUPPORT DEPARTMENT, SKANDINAVISKA GLASSYSTEM AB JEC Composites Magazine: How was your partnership for this innovative cladding project initiated? Have you worked together on other programmes before? ERIK STENING: We started to investigate possibilities for this project in 2007. DIAB was well known in the composite business. It was their product quality and ability to do structural calculations that convinced us to choose them as a partner. JCM: What was the most difficult aspect of this project from a technical point of view? E. S.: Considering the fact that SGS had never worked with plastics or composites before, I must say it was all difficult. We managed to rebuild our factory from traditional aluminium façade elements to a complete composite line in less than a year. However, this would not have been possible without the fantastic cooperation from Carlsberg Property, Pihl & Söner, DIAB and several others. JCM: The building and its cladding are now finished. What did this project bring to you in professional terms? E. S.: We have shown that we are able to carry out projects with a totally new technique for the building/construction industry. This gives us new opportunities to expand this market together with DIAB and our other partners. JCM: Working with a new material was probably not easy for you. Will you use sandwich structures for other buildings? E. S.: We had used sandwich constructions before, but usually only for a limited part of the project. We will definitely continue if we get a chance. JCM: Do you have any other partnerships planned for new developments? E. S.: We met a lot of future prospects at the JEC exhibition but we have not received another contract for this type of system as yet. However, the process from initial enquiry to order usually takes some time. the steel-reinforced concrete floors of the building virtually as soon as the floors are complete and without the need for additional supporting steelwork. Other benefits of the sandwich approach include the fact that the system offers inherent insulation properties, does not rust or corrode, and is basically immune to moisture uptake even if the uninstalled modules are left exposed to the elements on the building site for a prolonged period of time. To exercise complete control over every stage of the project, SG, again with support from DIAB, set up a new dedicated production facility to manufacture the various modules using an industrialized production system based on DIAB Core Infusion™. DIAB core kits To facilitate the infusion process, DIAB is supplying SG with complete core kit sets for each module type. Seeing that the core is used as the resin transfer medium, it is first grooved and perforated to ensure rapid flow rates. Then the individual kit parts are shaped and rebated as necessary using CNC machines. The benefits of this approach are that lay-up time is significantly reduced and the actual infusion is both more predictable and repeatable, which results in a more consistent and higherquality end product. In addition, there is zero core material wastage for SG. The actual infusion time per module is 180 minutes. As the pioneers of this concept, DIAB has unrivalled experience in the manufacture of core kits. In the case of the ‘cladding’ kits, DIAB was able to speed the kit manufacturing process by directly importing the digital drawings produced by SG into its CAD/CAM systems. Once the composite elements are ready, they are transported to another Skandinaviska Glassystem facility that is located close to the actual building site in Copenhagen. Here, the glazing units and travertine cladding are installed. The decision to make the assembly a twostage process was deliberate in order to minimize damage to the relatively fragile travertine and to reduce transportation costs and problems (especially during winter). The completed modules are installed onto the building by a four-member team using a specially developed, re-useable mounting fixture. The modules are currently being installed on the building and this process is expected to be completed in the first few months of 2009. Market potential There is little doubt that this new composite-based façade system provides architects with new possibilities in terms of shapes and geometries which would have been impossible to produce on a cost-effective basis using traditional methods. The possibilities for this system are endless, both in Europe and around the world. Although travertine stone cladding was used in this case, other finishes such as granite, stainless steel, aluminium and mosaic could be readily substituted.
