The tool surface must be free of contaminants so that the sealer can properly bond to the surface. The sealer is formulated with polymers that bond chemically and physically to the surface being coated. This bonding is what provides the strong multiplerelease attributes. Problems may arise if the surface is not thoroughly cleaned. Zyvax has developed two cleaning agents, a solvent-based one and a solvent-free one, which ensure complete cleaning of the tool surface. Customers should use them according to the type of contaminants to be removed. Surface Cleaner is a solvent-based cleaner that efficiently removes oils and waxes. This product is extremely useful in removing heavy wax build-up as it dissolves the wax better than styrene or acetone. WaterClean is a solvent-free cleaning agent designed to break the chemical bonds of sealers and release agents of polymeric nature. The contaminants break loose and are suspended in the cleaning foam. The residue can then easily be removed by rinsing out the tool surface with fresh water. - The mould is brand new: a brand new mould keeps on emitting styrene for several days. This residual styrene may attack the release coating chemically, leading to severe stick-up of the gelcoat. - The mould is repaired: a repaired area of the mould behaves very much like a brand new mould. - The mould is badly damaged: a deteriorated mould surface may have to be sealed to facilitate the release. Application of the release agent Zyvax semi-permanent release agents are designed to work on every type of tooling material, including steel, aluminium, polyester, epoxy, plates or rubber. They provide excellent release when used in conjunction with thermoplastic or thermoset matrices, polymers, elastomers, and natural or synthetic rubber. These semi-permanent release polymers are designed to bond directly to the surface of the tool giving no transfer to the released part. Zyvax has developed several release agent formulations, either solvent-based or solvent-free, to answer the moulding problems encountered by customers. By applying the right release agent, customers can control the level of release needed for each tool. This way they can solve problems ranging from pre-release to hard release by simply changing the slip level of the release coating. Zyvax semi-permanent release agents also provide the tool surface with a very good finish. A variable slipcoat system may be required when working with large polyester structures such as boats. Zyvax has developed a true semi-permanent formulation composed of an array of six polymers that offer the possibility to finely change the slip level of the tool. Each polymer offers a slip level that comes from minimum slip up to extra slip. This release system is know as Flex-Z and has been designed to control physical and chemical factors in unsaturated polyester environments that may lead to pre-release or lack of release. Moreover, the application of this mould release system may also Fig. 6: Spray application of Zyvax counterbalance the effects of release agent Flex-Z. other potential pre-release factors such as temperature, catalyst, etc. The Flex-Z release system also offers other benefits such as: fast and easy application with spraying equipment or wipes, high gloss, no streaks, odourless, and elimination of gelcoat fish eyes. Sealing the mould The use of a mould sealer is probably the most critical yet often the most overlooked part of the entire release process. The tool sealer can increase the performance of Fig. 5: Mould cleaning with the mould release, provide Zyvax WaterClean. more consistent release, and increase tool life. All materials have some degree of porosity that contributes to release problems to a certain extent. The correct use of a mould sealer will reduce the surface porosity and help prevent the potential mechanical lock of the resin onto the tool surface. It also provides an excellent base to hold the release agent. Zyvax Sealer GP has proven to be a very effective sealer on a wide variety of tool and mould materials. This product is a durable polymeric coating that reduces micro-porosity imperfections and provides a firm anchor for the release agent. The net result is that the release agent is more effective. Using Sealer GP provides a uniform tool surface, thus eliminating potential trouble spots. The better the release agent bonds to the tool, the more effective the release will be. At this point, it is important to mention that the application of a sealer may not always be advisable when moulding large structures. From a mould treatment perspective, it is necessary to have a certain level of grip on the mould surface to offset the shrinkage of the part or gelcoat. The use of a sealer may overly enhance the overall slip level of the mould surface, resulting in prerelease problems. Therefore, when moulding polyester structures of more than 8 m, it is not recommended to use a surface sealer unless: Fig. 7: Spray application of Zyvax release agent Flex-Z.
