properties with customizable electrical and thermal conductivity. That combination will be a powerful game changer in our ability to compete against traditional materials. J.C.M.: You are inaugurating a center of excellence for fabrics. Are you also considering other investments or acquisitions in that field? C.D. : We are continually evaluating new options, but we certainly have a number of initiatives underway as we speak. You mention the new center, and we have the ongoing construction of our newest reinforcement facility in Hangzhou, China, and are breaking ground on a major new expansion in our Gous-Khroustalny, Russia, facility. J.C.M.: Owens Corning is a global player. In that frame of reference, will you focus entirely on your organic growth, or are you considering new acquisitions to add to your portfolio? C.D. : We have been aggressive with both acquisitions and organic growth in recent years. We acquired reinforcement operations from Asahi Fiber Glass and Saint-Gobain, and have the China and Russian projects I just mentioned underway. We’ve also continually been converting our plants to our patented boron - and fluorine-free Advantex manufacturing platform, which has a much smaller environmental footprint than traditional e-glass – and produces products which provide industry-leading corrosion resistant properties. We now have 37 facilities in 15 countries, bringing us close to our customers and producing and selling in the local environment.

J.C.M.: Do you think it is possible for composite materials to meet the current recycling requirements and fit in with a sustainable economy? C.D. : Absolutely. Our industry, like most others, is fully engaged in raising the bar on recyclability, and we’re making great progress on a number of fronts. For example, at Owens Corning we’re already tackling a leading use of composites in the world – fiberglass-reinforced roofing shingles. Asphalt shingles are a standard in the US, and our Roofing and Asphalt business recently became the first manufacturer to simplify shingle tear-off recycling through a national strategic alliance. Our alliance partner provides convenient and efficient local recycling facilities and processes the torn-off shingles for use in paving material. More and more, we’re also seeing recyclability designed into new applications as a key performance criteria. For example, a recent JEC-award winning Twintex® fiber application for window lineal not only eliminates steel inserts, but was designed to be fully recyclable at the end of life. The same is true for concrete panels reinforced with Owens Corning Cem-FIL® alkaliresistant (AR) fibers, which are 100 percent recyclable. That recyclability was one of the key reasons this product was chosen for the exterior cladding of the sustainably built 2010 World Cup soccer stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. J.C.M.: What challenges should our industry tackle next? C.D. : Without question, an unrelenting

focus on continuing to grow the use of composites is critical. An ongoing investment in both innovation and education is key industry wide and world wide if we’re to truly grow the pie, which is now just 1.5% of the materials market. However, we also need to ensure that returns in the composites industry continue to be attractive enough to generate the investments needed to continue growing and meeting our customers needs. Given the recent negative impact on businesses that were highly leveraged and had large inventories, leaders today are more cautious about borrowing and building capacity and inventories ahead of demand. J.C.M.: In more general terms, what are the drivers for your growth today? C.D. : The key macro drivers for the economy tie directly into our business today – energy efficiency, renewable energy, growth in developing markets. Composites are lighter weight and make more fuel efficient transportation possible, they enable technologies like wind energy, and as a company, we’re well positioned in developing markets, especially in the BRIC markets. That’s a great convergence of what the world needs and the value proposition composite materials and Owens Corning can deliver – and an exciting place to be. The composites industry has a bright future and we’re looking forward to working with our customers to continue to transform the future of the materials market.

is for anyone and three $10,000 awards are reserved for students. The competition will have three phases: - Participants must submit their applications or ideas through the competition Web site by Agust 15, 2010 (www.occompositeappchallenge.com). - Judges will be looking at the content

of the idea, the potential market opportunity, the time needed to commercialize the application, the business case, technical feasibility and the contestant’s ability to commercialize the application or solution. - Eight finalists will then be selected and invited to present their ideas. Final decisions will be made on the likelihood

of scalability and long-term success. Winners will be announced in February 2011, at the trade show hosted by the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. USA. More information: www.owenscorning.com
