Composite materials: more surprises in store for us
That composite materials can still surprise us was demonstrated once again on July 7 with the experimental Solar Impulse aircraft’s first night flight. The airplane stayed aloft for a total 26 hours, powered by four electric motors that were in turn powered by an array of 12,000 photovoltaic cells. The feat could not have been accomplished without relying massively on composite materials and their special properties. The struggle to lower weight was a constant priority. To offset the 400 kilos of the four polymer lithium batteries without hindering the aircraft’s performance, the other components had to be made as lightweight as possible. In the end, the Solar Impulse weighs only 1,600 kg for a wingspan of 63 metres – as wide as an Airbus A340! This result was obtained by using a carbon fibre/honeycomb sandwich structure. A round-the-world flight with stops is scheduled for 2013 or 2014. While the aerospace industry is often pointed out for the state-of-the-art technology and materials used, the marine sector – especially the offshore racing segment – is also an excellent field for experimentation with composite materials. Proof of this was provided by Franck Cammas on March 20, when he won the highly coveted Jules Verne trophy, pushing the envelope a bit further to establish a new round-the-world sailing record of 48 days, 7 hours and 44 minutes on his Multiplast-built trimaran, Groupama 3, slicing 2 days, 8 hours and 35 minutes off the previous record held by Bruno Peyron on Orange 2. Need we specify that the boat is made entirely of composite materials? The carbon prepregs, adhesive film and pultruded profiles used for the hulls, floats, crossbeams, deck, interior fittings, mast and boom were manufactured by Structil using high-resistance, high-modulus carbon fibres from Mitsubishi Rayon. In both cases, aircraft and water craft, the composite structures are subject to tremendous physical stresses. These machines must operate in conditions that fluctuate considerably, so their architecture must be designed to resist unforeseeable events. Tomorrow, the materials will perform even better, the architectures will be optimized, and ever lighter boats and airplanes will go faster and farther.
