The Mini class constitutes a wonderful playing field for architects and sailors alike. As for innovation, let’s not forget that Minis have helped to usher in the use of canting keels, water ballast tanks to provide balance weight on one side of the boat or the other, leeboards to optimize keel performance, double rudders, booms for use with gennakers and other asymmetrical spinnakers, full roach mainsails, and more.

In fact, the mechanical properties of flax fibre approach those of some of the fibres currently used, such as glass. The appeal of the project is manifold: technical yet environmentally friendly, with the potential to move into a large number of applications (e.g. marine, aviation), and, from an economic point of view, it helps to promote flax industry players.

High-tech benchmark

Since 1977, prototypes have evolved into today’s veritable racing machines with their extended sails. These machines can close haul and provide a sensational sailing experience. With sail areas of 50 m upwind and 120 m downwind, prototypes are trending towards lower weight with a maximum of the ballast concentrated in the bottom and the bulb keel. And it has certainly been worthwhile to centre and lower the weight, increase the sail surface, decrease the underwater area and still maintain the keel performance.

For the first time, a racing boat prototype incorporating up to 50% flax fibre in its composite structure will be taking part in the 2011 Mini Transat 6.50 transatlantic yacht race, which will start in Western France in September and end in Brazil. Designed by Regis Garcia to showcase the possibilities of incorporating flax fibres into the composite structure of an open-sea sailing prototype, the Araldite was built at the well-known IDB Marine de Tregunc shipyard in Brittany, France. The ultimate goal was to adopt a cleaner production process whilst combining the renewable properties of flax with the well-known highperformance characteristics of carbon fibre (50% of the structure), without compromising the lightweight or mechanical properties. Lineo, a Belgian company that specializes in flax reinforcements, provided the various fibres, which are specially treated to ensure perfect compatibility between the flax and Huntsman’s Araldite warm curing system. Lineo uses new technology to coat flax fibres with epoxy resins in a way that prevents the flax from absorbing water and creates strong bonds between the flax fibres and the epoxy resin, ensuring the quality of the laminate.

The process limits humidity absorption

Patented technology

Lineo’s unique patented impregnation process offers several key advantages. It creates a very strong bond between the natural fibres and the thermoset resin, resulting in composites with mechanical properties equivalent to those of glass-

fibre-reinforced composites. The process also limits humidity absorption by the natural fibres, preventing fibre degradation, moisture issues and drawbacks in composite processing. The pre-treatment of flax fibres results in a temperature resistance up to 250°C, allowing the use of flax-fibre prepregs or fabrics in the main composite manufacturing processes. The high number of yarns (more than 10,000) used in the fibre spinning process limits the effect of variations in culture conditions and ensures homogeneous prepreg behaviour from batch to batch. The Araldite was launched on 9 September 2010 and will have already participated in a number of races before attacking the Atlantic. The project was completed in just over 12 months, the time needed, in particular, to validate the right blend between flax, epoxy resin and carbon fibres, so as to reach the optimum performance for the boat. The boat’s characteristics were tested by main skipper and naval engineer Thibault Reinhart during the June 2010 MiniFasnet Race, which took the boat from Douarnenez (Brittany) to the Irish Sea. n More information: www.votreregard.fr, www.lineo.eu, www.huntsman.com
