first experience with HyperWorks was in
2006, when it designed the ABN AMRO
White team's yacht for the Volvo Ocean
Race. Since then, the company has used it
successfully for several other Volvo Ocean
Race and America's Cup yachts. In 2012,
[AB]structures used HyperWorks for
the structural design and optimization of
three VO70 round-the-world racing yachts
for the 2011-2012 edition of the Volvo
Ocean Race. These were the Groupama
4 yacht, skippered by Franck Cammas,
which claimed victory on July 9, 2012 in
Galway, Ireland, after 9 months and more
than 37,000 nautical miles sailed around
the world under the harshest conditions;
the Puma Ocean Racing yacht powered
by Berg, finishing third and winning the
overall inshore racing championships; and
Team Telefonica, which followed in fourth
place overall, after initially winning the first
three legs of the race. Working alongside
the naval architects of the yachts, each of
these teams needed different structural
solutions from [AB]structures, requiring
them to continuously explore the bounda-

ries of the design envelope.
Structural analysis and optimization is
critical for achieving reliable lightweight
structures while fulfilling structural requirements. Besides using manual
calculation and advanced design
software such as HyperWorks Suite,
[AB]structures also developed specialized
analysis tools to allow the engineers to
increase the mechanical performance of
composite structures. The methodologies
used might, for example, focus on optimization of the ply system orientation and
ply stacking sequence. This allows tailoring
an optimum composite structure for each
particular application.

Simulation expertise to design and
build winning sport sailing yachts
Among other tools, the [AB]structures
engineers used the Altair technologies to
develop three structurally optimized but
unique racing yachts in a preset time frame.
The design took the boundary conditions
of the Volvo Ocean Race challenge into
consideration. One such condition is the

"We have been using HyperWorks for a long time, in many projects - with [AB]structures as
well as within former work projects," says Andrea Avaldi, [AB]structures. "I like this software
suite because its open architecture has enabled us to integrate several design processes into
one portal, which has partly automated our calculations and allowed us to have more time
for the design aspect of structural engineering, which was very important with three boats in
development simultaneously."

Volvo Open70 Box Rule which, for example, specifies keel weight at 6.0-7.4 metric
tons and overall measured yacht weight at a
minimum 14 tons.
Finite element modelling and analysis are
applied for buckling analysis, modal analysis, and non-linear solutions. With topology optimization, the engineers looked for
the best material distribution in the design
space for given boundary conditions such
as loads and for specified targets, maximizing stiffness and reducing weight. Beyond
the optimization aspect, HyperWorks
includes the capability of simulating complex carbon-composite laminate sequences,
which is helpful for these kinds of projects
since the VO70 yachts are designed and
built entirely from carbon composites.
The engineers used the suite's
HyperMesh meshing tool to create finite
element models, OptiStruct for optimization tasks, the RADIOSS solver for linear
and non-linear analysis, and HyperView to
post-process the results. They used these
tools extensively to design and optimize the
carbon structures of all three latest Volvo
Open 70 yachts and make fundamental
structural improvements over the previousgeneration yachts that competed in former
editions of the Volvo Ocean Race.
By applying HyperWorks to the design
process for the structural parts of VO70's
Groupama, Puma Ocean Racing and
Telefonica yachts, [AB]structures could
handle most of the development tasks in
structural design within a single software
environment and under the same license
agreement (thanks to Altair's flexible
license system). With a minimum weight
rule in place for overall yacht and keel,
[AB]structures was able to reduce the
yachts' vertical centre of gravity, resulting in a higher righting moment, by using
the HyperWorks optimization tool in the
central part of the design. When the yachts
were already in the race, [AB]structures
used on-site repair options by defining and
optimizing the structure of a panel before it
was built. n
