Hyundai Heavy Industries
(HHI) has developed a highperformance membrane LNG
cargo containment system.
The shipbuilding giant's
new containment system for
liquefied natural gas received
design approval from classification societies including ABS
and DNV.

T

he containment system can be used
for liquid natural gas carriers (LNG),
LNG floating production, storage and
offloading (FPSO) units, LNG fuelled vessels, and LNG bunkering systems. It features
dual metal barrier and high-performance
insulation systems. The thin STS304L and
Invar-alloy barriers are optimized to sustain
thermal, fatigue, and sloshing loads. They
are specifically designed to prevent LNG
leakage at the welded secondary barrier.

than 10% of the stored liquefied natural gas
in comparison with conventional insulation

made up of reinforced polyurethane foam
and plywood are specially designed for areas
prone to sloshing damage such as LNG tank
corners.

High standards
Hyundai Heavy's LNG technology meets
International Maritime Organization
standards requiring a high level of structural
analysis, fatigue analysis, comparative wet/
dry drop test, and fluid-structural interaction
analysis for membrane-type LNG cargo
containment systems. HHI will commercialize the membrane LNG cargo containment
system after the final performance test.
The Ulsan, South Korea-based company
introduced an independent liquefied natural
gas storage tank model, the Lobe-Bundle
tank. This model uses ring-shaped plates
instead of conventional flat plates to reduce
tank weight and building cost, and spraytype insulation to substantially reduce
construction time.
With the development of the Lobe-Bundle
tank and Hyundai membrane LNG cargo
containment system, Hyundai Heavy is
now better-positioned to build quality
LNG carriers living up to the high standards
demanded by the global market. n

Hyundai Shipbuilding Division, the world's number one shipbuilder, leads the global shipbuilding industry with a 15% share of the market. The Hyundai shipyard stretches over four
kilometers along the coast of Mipo Bay in Ulsan, Korea. The Shipbuilding Division is capable

268 shipowners in 48 countries since 1972.
