Bigger, Faster, Cheaper
This slogan seems to sum up the main challenges facing our industry
today. Finding solutions is not easy, but is essential if our young industry (compared to other materials) is going to achieve much greater
production volumes than are currently possible. Here is an overview
of the past year and future goals.

he wounds from the subprime crisis have healed
over in most countries, at
least in terms of production volume. Globally, composites have
resumed growth. While 2012
was not an outstanding year in
Europe, the figures for 2013 are
more encouraging. The United
States is recovering better than
Europe, despite subsidy cuts for
wind energy and the still-stricken boating market. Asia's GDP
growth rates are enabling that
region to develop its composites
market.
... but with
many challenges
The article's title "Bigger, Faster,
Cheaper" pretty much sums up
the main challenges our industry
must tackle: bigger size, bigger
volume, faster production rate,
cheaper price. While the first
item concerns only some of our
user markets, like wind energy,
the three others concern all
markets.
Bigger size
In wind energy, gigantic size
is already here with a number
of solutions: Enercon E126
7.5MW, Samsung S7.0 171
7MW, Repower 6M Series,
Siemens SWT-6.0 150, Sinovel
SL6000, Alstom Haliade, Areva
M5000, Bard 5MW, XEMC
5MW, Gamesa G5MW, and
more. New turbines are getting
ever huger, due to the quest for
better performance and more
efficient use of weak winds,
and to offshore developments
(especially in the United
Kingdom). Vestas is developing
the 164-8.0 MW® wind turbine,
which has 80-metre-long
rotor blades (each weighing
35 metric tons!) and a rotor
diameter of 164 metres. Compare that to the 79.75-metre
wingspan of the Airbus A380!
Along the same lines, the
Energy Technologies Institute
(ETI) announced in January
2013 that it was investing £15.5
million in a partnership with
Blade Dynamics to develop and
demonstrate the technological
feasibility of building what
could be the longest blades ever
built, at 80-100 metres (as long
as a soccer field), by incorporating carbon fibres.
Towards a much
rosier future...
While obviously linked to the
growth rate of each country's
GDP, the volume growth rate
for composites in all countries
concerned has for the past ten
years or more almost always
surpassed the GDP growth
rate. This annual indicator
for composites is expected to
remain twice that for GDP at
least until 2017, at 6.2% vs. 3.1%
(see Figure 1). Beyond that, the
