Second-generation PIMC: powder in-mouldcoatings with internal mould release properties
Class A surface finishing of FRP (fibre-reinforced plastic) components used to be impossible without manifold costly manual operations
such as filing, polishing or sanding processes. In
recent years, the development of PIMC (Powder
in-Mould Coating) technology improved efficiency dramatically. However, mould release agents
still needed to be applied before the PIMC layer
was sprayed into the mould. A new generation
of powder coatings with internal mould release
properties has been developed, allowing further
automation of the PIMC process.

process.
When using a standard PIMC process, the application of an external
release agent on a cold or preheated mould is essential before
electrostatically spraying a controlled layer thickness of powder into
the mould. Then, the FRP is produced using standard production
cycles to cure the composite resins. The only difference is that the
mould is coated with the PIMC (Figure 1) before the fibre material is inserted. During the curing cycle, the powder coating is cured
together with the resin and integrated in the FRP, resulting in strong
chemical bonding and interface adhesion. PIMC coatings create a
strong chemically cross-linked surface layer on the composite material preventing fibre telegraphing. When the composite component
is removed from the mould, it basically shows a negative image of the
mould surface - a smooth, porous-free surface ready to be overcoated with automotive Class A surface finishes.

he field of powder coatings and their traditional applications
are still expanding. Today, dry solvent-free powder coatings are
widely used for decorative and functional interior and exterior
applications on metal. New innovative applications of powder coatings are reaching the market, especially using highly reactive powders
for heat-sensitive materials such as medium-density fibreboard
(MDF) and engineered wood or very thin layer powders for internal
can coatings. The common driving forces for such new applications
are the replacement of solvent-borne lacquers, the reduction of emissions and CO2 footprint and the production of very robust surface
finishes. A very new area for powder applications is Class A surface
finishing via PIMC, where powder coatings are used as primer for
glass- and carbon-FRP.
PIMC is a technique that, integrated into other production processes
such as resin transfer moulding (RTM), sheet moulding compounds
(SMC), bulk moulding compounds (BMC) or prepreg pressing, is
capable of efficiently producing Class A surface finishes on high-

With this new technique, the FRP material does not require any grinding, filing, smoothing or profiling before applying the automotive
topcoat, but only cleaning of the external release agents previously
applied onto the mould. The final composition of a product with
clear and coloured top coatings is shown in Figure 2.
The PIMC technology presented here allows the production
of high-quality composites with a Class A surface finish while
reducing the final costs of the finished component up to 70 %.
In fact, further reductions can be achieved in special cases with
complex 3D geometries.
