State of the art
In the past years,
PIMC was used to
produce components
for highly prestigious
sport cars and small
series production.
Today, driven by
the development of
lightweight and fuelefficient vehicles, it is

due to its advantages in terms of efficiency, automation and green
technology. Tiger Coatings already offers its clients different powder
formulations specifically matched for individual RTM, SMC, BMC
or prepreg processing cycles. Unfortunately, all of today's commercial systems still require the application of an external mould release
agent. These mould release agents are usually applied manually and
slow down the process and add cost, giving rise to concerns and
objections from potential customers.
This is the reason why this work focused on developing a second
generation of PIMC formulations including an internal mould
release agent. During the first part of the project, a new testing
method was established where all production parameters, such as
temperature (110-160°C) or the simulation of a metallic mould
surface, were taken into account. The adhesion between the metallic
mould and powder coatings was analysed by pull-off tests with a
PosiTest® instrument usually used for the ASTM D4541/D7234,
ISO 4624/16276-1 or AS/NZS 1580.408.5 standards.
In the course of the project, the production parameters and composite manufacturing conditions considered covered a wide range
of FRP production methods. Different powder-based resins with
diverse internal release agents were added to identify a formulation
showing the required mould release properties even without an
external mould release agent. In some cases, a special extrusion
process for the manufacture of powder coatings was used to optimise
the dispersion of the internal mould release agents.

temperature and it was found that the loss of adhesion was further
improved at lower temperatures.
Formulations with a low degree of adhesion to the metallic mould
surfaces were analysed in terms of physico-chemical stability,
strength, resistance, curing parameters and appropriate surface
energy. Most of them showed all the properties needed for a wellcontrolled PIMC technology. In fact, rheological data show that
these internal mould release agents can even improve the quality of
the final component in regards to surface finishing.

Summary
Internal mould release agents were successful introduced into PIMC
powder coatings. The resulting PIMC were easily de-moulded, with
outstanding final surface quality. At this point of time, it looks like
external mould release agents and their manual application can be
avoided in the production of FRP components, resulting in cost
savings and improved surface finishes.
This study demonstrates that PIMC is a process that is geared
towards productivity and mass manufacturing. It is a process of high
capability, cost efficiency and eco-friendliness as compared to liquid
IMC solutions. Additional PIMC is featuring an area specific filmthickness-management. This means you can control the thickness of
the PIMC-layer on different areas of the FRP components. Although
this project was focused on the automotive and aerospace sector,
many other applications in furniture, sport equipment or machinery
parts industry seem to be feasible by PIMC composites. n

Experimental results
Several PIMC formulations with different resin types and ratios were
investigated, showing a huge variety of properties. Many formulations lost some essential properties for PIMC and could not be used.
However, other formulations performed exceptionally well. In certain cases, the addition of fatty acid salts and organic acids proved to
be useful. The loss of adhesion reached up to 91%, depending on the
chosen mould material and the working temperature (110-160°C).
As shown in Figure 3, adhesion can be well controlled by varying the
type of internal release agent (or mixture) used and the temperature
settings of the process.
It was clearly shown that pull-off test values at 160°C were much
higher than at lower temperatures. For comparison purposes, the loss
of adhesion was also tested after the samples were cooled to room
