relative to the fibre angles and ply weights.
The end result will be a low-weight, highperformance, and low-cost aircraft that is
poised to significantly enhance the light
sport aircraft (LSA) and other markets.
During the past few years, Chomarat and
VX Aerospace have developed a close
working relationship, where Chomarat
provides advanced reinforcement materials and VX provides important commercial and testing feedback that has helped
define some of the directional priorities in
the progression of C-Ply™. This material
is considered as the first true advance
in carbon fabrics in a long time. It is
designed to optimize fibre performance.
Chomarat capitalized on the low-angle,
thin ply, non-crimp laminate concept
developed by Professor Steve Tsai. The
result is a fabric that allows for cost-effective production of open-mould parts
with the same (or better) performance
characteristics as parts manufactured by
automated tape placement (ATP). This is
a game changer for small businesses.

These investments in the United States
are part of a process that began in 2011
when Chomarat launched C-Ply™ in partnership with a group of manufacturers
and academics. The partnership continues
to be based on the research of Stanford
University's Dr. Steven Tsai that suggests
it is possible to design and build better
composite parts by escaping the rules of
standard aluminium construction. C-Ply™
is the industrial embodiment of this
concept that can simultaneously reduce
weight and manufacturing cost, which
ultimately leads to composite structures
that are more competitive. The VX-1 KittyHawk is the perfect example of how to
benefit from these material advantages.

Cavernous aircraft
The ability to take full advantage of
the advanced materials available from
Chomarat will allow VX Aerospace to
efficiently create the cavernous aircraft...
and the huge volume is a huge advantage.
Gear, sensors, and even people will have
more space. A two-place manned version
of the KittyHawk will have a cockpit
about 2 m wide, while most light aircraft
are well less than half of that width.
The volume also has other advantages.
Consider the drive for clean energy and
the growth in the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) for transportation fuel.
Most of the effort has been for trucks,
buses and fleet operators. Recently, there
has been an interest in using CNG in
piston-powered light aircraft. A major
problem is the tank volume, where traditional aircraft simply have no room for the
high-pressure CNG tank(s).

The available internal volume of the VX-1
solves this problem.
CNG is currently far less expensive then
aviation fuel, 40% cleaner and abundant,
and there is no aerodynamic penalty for
the KittyHawk to incorporate CNG. The
advantages and economics define a very
compelling story.

More volume, more payload, more efficiency, and better manufacturability are
the important factors for this programme,
but there is also a benefit of improved
durability. The footprint of the aircraft is
smaller in terms of wingspan than traditional aircraft with equivalent useful loads.
For small-scale unmanned versions, this
makes for easier ground transport and storage. The one-piece aircraft will not have
to be disassembled between missions and
will be much sturdier in off-field landing
environments (i.e. ditching in a corn field
will not break the wings).
The KittyHawk development has completed CFD (computational fluid dynamics)
and wind tunnel evaluations. The performance criteria anticipated have so far
been validated. The next phase is sub-scale
flight performance testing, which is underway at North Carolina State University in
Raleigh, NC. n

Chomarat has been manufacturing the CPly™ product for more than 3 years now
and has recently established a new 5,600m² facility in South Carolina that will be
dedicated to the development of Chomarat's advanced composites activities. The
new facility will complement two existing
plants that have been operating in the
Anderson/Greenville area since 1985 and
2006. The advanced composites facility
was commissioned at the beginning of
2014 and will start production of C-Ply™
before mid-year 2014.

equipped with the new Liba MAX5 254cm machine (variable width) for producing spread-tow carbon multiaxials. The
state-of-the-art machine will help boost
Chomarat's development in the carbon
markets and complement the spread/
non-spread carbon fabric offerings
already available in France and Asia. The
new plant will also include carbon weaving capacity to complement the C-Ply™
production.
