Who would not like to call this smart Samsonite suitcase made out of stylish glossy
plastic material with a fabric structure his
own? One cannot think of being without this
type of suitcase at any airport or railway
station around the world. However, you don't
know very much about the companies behind
this product.

ymmen Industrieanlagen and Propex met
for the first time at the
K trade fair. Propex developed
the Curv® fibre composite,
the thermoplastic base layer
for the suitcases, and Hymmen supplied Propex with a
continuous double-belt press
for the production of thermoplastics.

Initially, only technical
applications in the automotive
industry (like high-quality
engine protections) were in
focus. Until then, thermoset fibre composites had
been used in the automotive
industry but a thermoplastic
would offer higher flexibility
for further processing.
Meanwhile, the decorative
aspect of this material has
become another unique sales
argument. Due to its use as a
case shell by Samsonite, Curv®
is enjoying more and more
popularity.

Fields of application
When Curv® was developed,
fibre composites had just
appeared in the market.
Introduced in 2001, Curv® was
a highly innovative product
which opened up new fields of
application.

At present, there are diverse
fields of application for the
material: suitcase shells, sport
protectors, automotive applications (interior & exterior),
anti-ballistic products, etc. The
material is also used as a base
layer for lightweight sandwich
structures, ideally in combination with thermoplastic cores.
It is available in rolls or boards,
with a thickness of 0.35 up to
2.95 mm, in any length and a
maximum width of 1360 mm.

Product properties
Curv® is a new thermoplastic
material concept that bridges
the gap between pure plastics
and conventional fibre-reinforced materials. The material
is a combination of high-performance fibres and a matrix
made of exactly the same material, therefore it can be described as «self-reinforced».
Although it is 100% polypropylene, it shows approximately
a five-fold higher rigidity and
load capacity compared to

conventional PP. The material
has a very high breaking elongation that, combined with a good
tensile strength, results in an
extremely high impact strength
even at temperatures as low as
-189°C. Furthermore, the material offers an extraordinary good
abrasion resistance and compression strength. It also has a stylish
and high-quality appearance due
to its metallic shine.
