Filament winding of
composite isogrid structures

development of globalization and the urge of new environmental
needs. It has to cope with the challenge of "More Affordable, Safer,
Cleaner and Quieter" products while meeting a demand that will
increase over the next years.

A

s part of the WASIS project,
which involves 11 European
companies located across 10
different countries and is funded by
the European Community's Seventh
Framework Programme (FP7), isogrid structures were developed based
on the lattice stiffening concept and
optimizing the geometrical and mass
properties of transition zones of fuselage structural joints. The material
selected to develop an all-composite
fuselage structure is carbon fibre impregnated with an epoxy resin.

Within this project, a novel integral

approach based on filament winding
of composite isogrid structures reinforced with continuous carbon fibre
was developed and implemented.
Isogrid structures - also known
as lattice or wafer structures - are
already used in several applications.
This project aims at meeting environmental demands and rising safety
requirements together with design
and manufacturing cost-efficiency
improvement.
The composite isogrid approach
makes it possible to improve mechanical behaviour, and thus reduce weight
and optimize structural performance,
which was demonstrated by comparative simulations against other
approaches. This benefit was com-

bined with specially designed joining
elements to manufacture innovative
integral isogrid structures, saving
weight and avoiding the structural
section weakening due to the cutting
of reinforcement fibres.

A highly productive technology
The isogrid structure can withstand
worst situation loadings, assessing
safety through the extensive use of
simulation and virtual testing. The
isogrid structure design is combined
with a highly-productive filament
winding technology to reduce manufacturing costs, save time and increase
safety while producing lighter components.
The project achieved several ambitious goals:
- Reduced component weight compared with the corresponding conventional stringer sections;
- Reduced manufacturing costs due
to the use of an automated filament
winding process;
- Integration of embedded fasteners
by filament winding, resulting in a
simple connection to attach the composite isogrid structures.
