JCM: In the present highly competitive
context, what are DSM Composites' main
advantages?

B.B. : First of all, we remain a high-qua-

lity resin supplier. On time, every time
deliveries with highly consistent products
is our target for supporting the daily business of all our customers. Secondly, DSM
has been (and will continue to be) the
leading innovator in composite solutions.
We have many great examples of bringing
new products to market, increasingly
in close collaboration with our direct
customers and channel partners. The
recent launch of a new wind turbine
blade system based on Beyone™ 201-A-01
(together with Siemens, 3B and DTU)
and the collaboration with AkzoNobel
to launch the BluCure™ technology for
cobalt-free resin curing are some nice
examples. And I can promise you, there is
more to come in 2015!

side, and the need to maintain a healthy
business volume to cover our overhead
costs. In the past two years, DSM has
gone through a major business redesign
and restructuring operation that has
helped to consolidate our market position
and secure long-term competitiveness.
Still, we are convinced that our industry
cannot and will not be successful if we
(i.e. the industry) don't invest in innovation which helps our products to differentiate from traditional material systems
and thermoplastics.
JCM: Are you planning to expand into new
geographical regions?

B.B. : DSM Composites Resins has
been operating in Europe, the Middle
East, and China. In these regions, we have
been able to develop a great sales and
distribution network. While restructuring

and debottlenecking our manufacturing
operations in Europe over the past years,
we opened in 2013 a brand new plant in
China based on best-in-class technology
to be ready for future growth in the Asian
region.
DSM Composite Resins has yet no plans
to start resin manufacturing in the Americas, in view of the number of players
already active, and the unique regional
product requirements. Meanwhile, we do
have options for licensing our technology
to other resin manufacturers for specific
market segments.
JCM: Are you planning to prospect in
application sectors other than the ones
(transportation, construction, infrastructure,
marine and industrial applications) you
already operate in?

B.B. : DSM has always had an open eye
for new business opportunities where
our expertise can generate added value.
This has helped us to set up collaborations with partners in new industries, in
many cases beyond our direct customers
and with influencers such as engineering
companies and service providers.
We will expand in new application sectors
selectively. Meanwhile, we are very
confident that our current composites
markets offer many opportunities for
further growth.
JCM: For your development, are you counting more on your capacity to offer new
products, or on winning new application
markets?

DSM has a track record of innovation,
both for improving composite performance and for developing more sustainable material alternatives. We continue
to build on our four pillars of innovation
(styrene-free, cobalt-free, GMP/food
contact, and renewables), that already
have generated many innovations in
recent years.
