been a valuable tool for optimizing
the design of these ovens. Figures 1
and 2, created using Autodesk Simulation CFD 2014, show the airflow and
temperature distribution at one end
of a 3-metre wide oven. Simulation
results include the temperature and
velocity uniformity, the rate of cold
air infiltration, the rate of process
gas escape, and the end-seal exhaust
temperature. In these figures, the effects of buoyancy, commonly referred
to as chimney effect, are apparent in

the end-seal portion of the oven. Cold
air enters at the low slots and hot oven
air escapes at the top slots, with some
air being forced through the towbands. Parameters that can be varied
include the oven width, oven height,
the number of tows and their spacing, the height of slot openings, the
number of solid horizontal partitions,
and the position of balancing valves in
the exhaust flow. Figure 3 shows the
mean slot velocities and integrated
mass flow rates for a 3-metre wide,
11-slot oven operating at 280°C with
a velocity of 3 m/sec. Ongoing CFD
work is focusing on high-capacity
ovens wider than 3 metres and with
high line speeds.

The carbonization of carbon fibre
precursor generates large amounts of
condensable VOCs and smoke that
require venting without depositing on
the tows or plugging the vents. The
furnaces used for this process must
provide uniform temperature and flow
with very little turbulence, in particular in the vicinity of the vents. Figure
4 shows the geometry of the 3-metre
wide LT furnace modelled in the simulation, and how gas flow at the vent
accelerates from laminar to turbulent.
Figure 5 shows the evolution of the

gas velocity cross-sectional uniformity at different furnace positions relative to a side vent. There is little flow
disturbance at locations more than 2
metres from the vent. Figure 6 shows
a simulation for bottom vents, and in
this case the uniformity disturbance is
insignificant at more than 1.5 metres
from the vent.

Side vents from bottom vents
CFD has also been used to differentiate the streamlines of side vents from
bottom vents. Figure 7 shows streamlines for side vents, characterized by
a well-organized acceleration to a 2
m/sec. maximum velocity. Figure 8
shows streamlines for bottom vents,
characterized by a swirl pattern. The
swirl is considered detrimental to the
process because particulate or broken
pieces of tow may become trapped
and create plugging. Ongoing CFD
work is focused on high-capacity
furnaces wider than 3 metres and with
multiple tow-bands. n
