Sports on the scene at JEC World 2019
Every year, JEC World's Planets are an opportunity to take stock of
several fields of application. Sports in general were in the spotlight
last March alongside the automotive, aeronautics and construction
sectors. This paper presents some interesting products - from
a materials, process or design point of view - exhibited at the
Sports Planet.
Semi-rigid boat produced by liquid infusion of thermoplastic resin
Arkema and Promarine jointly developed
this semi-rigid boat in order to offer an
innovative technical solution combining
outstanding performance and processability.
Made with Elium resin, the thermoplastic composite used for the boat offers a
smoother and glossier surface, improved
mechanical performance, including impact
and fatigue resistance, and significantly
higher water resistance than conventional materials. The resin can be easily infused
at room temperature for the production of large composite parts. The use of these
resins is naturally integrated in the workshops and adapted to the most commonly
used processes.

Linum longboards
Rocket Longboards uses ampliTex technical fabrics from
Bcomp Ltd. for reinforcement, vibration damping and visual
layers on the Linum board. The board thus has a longer life span
and snappy flex, and unlike glass fibres, the ampliTex fibres do
not chip when damaged, making glass splinters in the fingers a
thing of the past.
The material has a beautiful visual quality, high vibration
damping properties and a low eco-footprint - together with
low weight. Made from natural fibres, it is CO2 neutral over its
whole life cycle, offers 5x better vibration damping than carbon, and is available in a wide
range of versions to optimise performance for each customer's needs.

Speedmax 3D
Nordic ski
Fischer developed the
Speedmax 3D ski
with Gliding Sidewall
material. Designed to
reduce friction, the
material can actually be
waxed to support unheard of glide levels. The Cold Base Bonding process
enables better wax absorption and grindability. The
Speedmax 3D ski won the ISPO Award, the highest
quality seal for sporting goods.
By adding a waxable base material to the sidewalls,
the Speedmax 3D construction reduces friction for
improved glide speed. Coupled with top technologies
to reduce ski weight, this new generation of skis was
developed with the most successful World Cup racers
to be the lightest and fastest ever built.
The ski uses Air Core technology with carbon fibres
and G-Tape selected glass tape from Chomarat.

Competitive cycling wheel
With Corima's new wheel, competitors such as Astana Pro Team riders now get the best for time trial races. This wheel project
involved in-house CAD and FEA and the best Formula 1 and aeronautics providers, in-house prototyping, targeted wind-tunnel
tests and confirmation ground tests. The wheel's key advantages are stiffness (allowing for enhanced power transfer), vibration
absorption (the foam core also helps to absorb vibrations and sound for a quiet and more comfortable ride), reliability and lightness (the rider can exceed
100km/h) and aerodynamic design. The wheel is produced by compression moulding using a light and strong structural foam (Evonik's Rohacell), a lightweight PrimeTex 98gsm 3k fabric and a Hexply prepreg resin system from Hexcel.
