please explain what is SLE®?
Mitsubishi Gas Chemical:
Mitsubishi Gas Chemical is one of the leading company manufacturers
in polymers in Japan that was established in 1918 with a capital of
41.97 Billion JPY and more than 2300 employees. We had the pleasure
to meet with Shigeru Horie from Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Rie Ogino
from OGINO Business Management to introduce us to their new solid
lubricant SLE® for machining CFRP parts.

2. We also did some experiments with
trimming a CFRP part to see the effects
of SLE®. As shown is Figure 3, there are
no cutting-edge cracks with SLE® and we
end up with a well build-up edge.
SLE® is our Solid Lubricant Entry sheet
that enables dry machining. It is made
of water-soluble resin and comes in the
form of a sheet with an adhesive side,
you just need to peel the release film,
apply it to your part and start machining.
After the process, you can peel off the
SLE® sheet and no residues that affects
bonding and painting are left.
We have different thicknesses (0.5 mm,
1 mm, 2 mm) for different materials and
its thickness. Our product can be used
for drilling, trimming and milling and
gives high quality results.
What are the benefits
of your solid lubricant?

M.G.C.: SLE® is suitable for high level
machining and enables dry machining
of composites. It reduces the friction
heat and wear of tools which improves
the cutting surface quality and allows
to speed up the feed rate of machining.
You can see in the Figure 1 the dramatic
decrease of CFRP drilling temperature.
The Epoxy resin was kept under Tg and
the thermal history of the drill bit's cutting edge was decreased.
One of the main issues while machining
CFRP(UD) parts is the remaining uncut
fibres. With the use of our product in the
exit side of the part, splinters and delamination were suppressed regardless of the
