HRC and Voith Composites to co-develop
hydrogen high pressure vessels for fuel cell applications
In order to overcome today's challenges and to meet the market´s
requirements new vessel concepts, process routes and material
systems are required. The companies have signed the MoU to
jointly work on next generation hydrogen high pressure vessels for
FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles).
According to China's Hydrogen Energy
and Fuel Cell Industry White Book,
breakthroughs have been made in key
technologies and technical bottlenecks such
as power density, life and cold start of fuel cell
stacks. By the end of 2018, the installed capacity of hydrogen fuel cells
in the world had exceeded 2.090,5 MW, and the total sales of passenger
vehicles had reached 9.900 initially realizing commercial application.

24,000 tons with a total investment of $820M by 2028
This would be one of the largest capacities of a single plant in
the world. With the first expansion underway, the company
plans to complete a carbon fiber plant with an annual
capacity of 2,000 tons in January 2020 and begin full-scale
production in February.
When the addition of 10
lines is completed by 2028,
Hyosung's global market share
will rise from 11th (2 %) as of
2019 to 3rd (10 %) in the world.
Employment is also expected
to increase from the current 400 to more than 2,300 new jobs
by 2028.
As a strategic material used in aviation, space, and defense,
it is difficult to transfer technology as well as develop it
independently, which is why only a few countries have such
technology. Hyosung became the first Korean company to
develop carbon fiber "Tansome" based on its own technology in
collaboration with Jeollabuk-do, Jeonju and the Korea Institute
of Carbon Convergence Technology in 2011 and has been
manufacturing products since 2013.
Carbon fiber is also regarded as a key material in the hydrogen
economy. The government announced a roadmap to revitalize
the hydrogen economy in January and said that it will use
hydrogen, which has wide-ranging economic and industrial
impacts, as its future growth engine.
To this end, the company plans to expand the number of
hydrogen cars from around 1,800 in 2018 to about 81,000 by
2022 and around 6.2 million by 2040.
Hydrogen cars are gaining attention as future eco-friendly
vehicles that reduce carbon dioxide emissions thanks to their
lightweight.
The carbon fiber market for hydrogen fuel tanks is expected to
grow more than 120 times by 2030.

Teijin and AEV Robotics to co-develop
lightweight automotive solutions for future transportation
Teijin has signed a joint development
agreement with an Australian venture
AEV Robotics (AEV) to create lightweight
components and solutions for next
generation transportation to realize new
forms for transportations in aging society. The components will use
Teijin's advanced materials such as polycarbonate resin, carbon and
aramid fibers, and composites technologies owned by Teijin and
its group companies including Continental Structural Plastics for
innovative structural design. Teijin will also contribute specialized
knowhow for heat management to optimize weight reduction and
heat insulation and for sound absorption. Teijin will additionally apply
expertise it has developed in supporting the Kogakuin University Solar
Team's participation in solar car race. Through this co-development
project, Teijin expects to continue striving to be a company that
supports the society of the future, particularly by offering new solutions
for automotive applications based on advanced materials and structural
design required for next-generation EVs.

Rise Sicomp signs Memorandum of Understanding with Korean institute KCTech
For initial discussions surrounding the possibilities for collaboration in research and innovation, the Korea Institute of Carbon Convergence
Technology (KCTECH) visited RISE SICOMP's Linköping office in June. A ceremony was held during the seminar Sweden-Korea Business
Summit, where a memorandum of understanding was signed. Examples of interesting areas for collaboration include sustainability with
biobased composites and technology for carbon fibre production, where both organizations see business opportunities that can be realized
by combining their complementary resources.
