Strong pressure on the wind energy
supply chain in a period of growth

O
f all the structures to be built from
composites, few are as awe-inspiring
as the LM 107.0 P blade fabricated
by LM Wind Power for GE's Haliade-X 12MW offshore wind turbine. At 107 metres
in length, the blade dwarfs the engineers
who designed and built it. According to LM
Wind Power, it is the longest turbine blade
manufactured to date and one of the largest
single components ever built. It is unlikely to
hold this title for long, however, as the wind
energy industry is engaged in a race to construct longer and longer turbine blades that is
reducing the cost of the electricity generated
by these colossal structures.
This "rotor race" is having significant impacts
on the wind energy industry, the materials
and manufacturing processes used to produce turbine blades - as well as on the supply
chain for their manufacture and the business
models of the leading OEMs.
In the last decade, pressure to lower the
levelized cost of electricity (LCoE) from
wind energy has led to intense and ongoing
competition between OEMs to bring turbines with lighter and longer blades to the
market. The longer the blades, the greater the
capacity of the turbine to generate electricity.

Although still in its infancy, the wind energy market is a
significant consumer of composite materials. For material
suppliers, the challenges - both technological and fiscal - are
numerous, but there will be bountiful opportunities when
the wind energy industry properly takes off. FMG consultant
analyst, Hamid Soorghali, explains.
This strategy has so far been successful.
Indeed, in terms of LCoE, the electricity
generated by onshore wind schemes is
around $0.0.5 per kW, which makes it cost
competitive with that produced using fossil
fuels (which range between $0.05 and $0.17
per kW).
Materials development
Currently, the wind energy industry
consumes around 1,040 kt of composite
materials worth a total of $3,000 million, or
11% of composites sold by value. It is the
fourth largest market for composites (based
on fibres and resin, excluding core materials)
The wind energy industry is engaged in a race to construct ever longer turbine blades that reduces the
cost of electricity generated by these colossal structures.
