cross the globe, the
entire automotive industry is pushing for
tighter mass targets in order
to satisfy the ever-increasing stringency of emission
standards, concern about
depleting fossil fuel reserves
and customer demand for
electric vehicles with extended ranges. The Ford UK
Innovation group teamed up
with Ford Chassis Engineering to investigate the possibility of reducing the mass
of commercial vehicle lower
control arms, front suspension cross members and rear
Ford Motor Company, in collaboration with Gestamp, The National Composites
Centre and The University of Nottingham, is developing composite suspension
components for commercial vehicle applications with Innovate UK. A combination of unique composite deployment and bespoke manufacturing processes is
resulting in 40% weight reduction compared to current fabricated steel components. The manufacturing technology investigated as part of the project includes
overmoulding, pultrusion and compression moulding, and will also include
joining techniques for hybrid materials to meet high-volume production cycle
times. The final part designs are nearing completion and manufacturing trials of
the components are due to commence in the first quarter of 2020.
